Lovely photo's Greg, and I've been meaning to say how envious I am of your new large tubs, I saw the pictures a while ago but keep forgetting to say Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Lovey dubby

None of mine are really huge. Silverline was my biggest at just over 6 inches but that bloomed this summer and with no offsets either Crying I have Othello which is meant to grow pretty big, but mine are both less than a year old and we didn't have ideal Summer conditions this year to say the least, so I'm hoping they will expand a lot next year

Peter,

I grew lots of seeds from 'Cleveland Morgan' and there were never any big ones. 'Sanfordii' is a big rosette, velvety and similar in many ways to 'Packardian'. Ed once told me that he thought 'Sanfordii' was the parent and I agree. Of course Ed kept no records. 'Sanfordii' is NOT the same as 'Sanford Hybrid' that is the parent of 'Tamberlane'. There were "Sanford Hybrid #1 and 2 that Sandy MacPherson named after buying the Sanford collection and I'm not sure which of those Patty used. Those Sanford hybrids are both glabrous. Patty Drown found all of these to be interesting parents, producing seedlings that were a bit different than the general tectorum-montanum-wulfenii complex that accounts for so many of our hybrids.

I just planted seed from self-pollinating 'Tamberlane' just to see what might be behind that plant.

Hope that helps!

Kevin

@Eviesmummy thanks! I too lost my larger semps to blooming, and no chicks. They were fun to have while I had them though! And I am looking forward to this year to see what gets large! My Fame montrose are looking very healthy, so they may be my giants this year!! Thumbs up

Thank you Julia and Greg. I wanted to stay out there and do some weeding and playing, but it was pretty wet.
Neida is trying very hard to prepare for making me seed for next season. I think she is a little confused. Whistling

I had several do that late this fall, start to send out blooms. It's funny the way they stay down at the base of the plant when weather turns cold.

I had one try to bloom late too! I bet that cold weather put an end to it. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Lynn, beautiful healthy ones are the plants. Beautiful winter colours! On the blooming good one being late was calculated. The time is mild always yet at us. There is not snow yet.

Connie, don't forget to take a photo for us of your bloomer. It should still be there and doing fine. I may have to keep the seed from Neida, just because she is so determined. Smiling

Laszlo we had snow and very cold weather for more than a week. The entire year of weather has been odd for us. I think that is why many plants here have been a bit confused about blooming. Even my guava bush started blooming again.

Calin were you able to get a photo of that piece of land you are thinking about buying? I would love to see it.

Lynn,

Great day for photography! Those overcast days are when all the colors can be seen easily. I grew 'Engle's 13-2' in MA. It is similar to a couple of others ('purdy's 90-1' is another of this type) and I never got any seedlings from any of them. Love that grey color and I'll try again here in Oregon to get seedlings from that group. It could be that my harsher conditions in MA killed off the seedlings as they did seem to make normal seed.

I still have a few that were trying to bloom but the hard freeze has sort of turned them into MUSH.

And you are right it was too wet to work but I did anyway. Was feeling guilt!

Kevin,
Just curious but, when you moved from place to place do you pack-up your sempervivum too. Seems that some are hard to find or non-existent. I would sure hate to move, would have one truck just for plants. Whistling

It's odd, but the blooms on Neida seem to be healthy and doing well. Shrug!

I love the color and texture of Engles. Maybe I will get a chance to use it this next growing season, if it blooms.

I did, but unfortunately when I came home, and read my notes "from what the seller said" I looked at the wrong lot.
He doesn't come with me to check it, I have to rely on my instinct.
So I will have to go again!
