I agree but to add a name to the plant database now the rules have changed. In the earlier days we could just request it. Now, you have to provide a website link to show that it is commercially available. So if not available anywhere you can't add it.

I think you will be fine because you have a website and you can sell yours online. But for us who are hobbyist, i could just upload under the "generic" plumerias.

I'm sorry, Gigi, I guess that I am just dense. A seedling, as you know, is a one-of-a-kind plant. It's not like I or anyone else for that matter, can produce this plant in any sort of quantity for many years. I'm just a hobbyist like you, a hobbyist that just happens to grow, propagate, and sometimes sell plants. I'm no longer a business, though I still have the website (just to protect the name.........why, I don't know). I ended 'Tropical Plants & More' 4 yr. ago.

Naming our seedlings is our right. The Plumeria Society of America clearly acknowledges this. I didn't know that NGA has now become an entity that prohibits this. In my humble opinion, we plumeria growers don't need to be policed.

Did you know that you can "reserve" the name of a seedling without registering it with PSA?

We can still name our seed grown plumerias for our personal collection. I still do, that is how I remember what to call them. But the name of our seed grown plumeria can't be added as a separate entry In the NGA database.

Maybe also there is not much demand for it from the members? I have 65+ seed grown blooming size plumerias and I refer to them with their names when I see them bloom. Whistling

I am sure you are right about the lack of interest. There seems to be a lack of interest about lots of things here. The vast majority of my "discussions" are on FB, where there are many folks that are interested in plumeria, and just about any other plant you can name. I guess I still visit here simply because I go back so far with this site, way back when All Things Plants was in its infancy. Habits are hard to break.........LOL

@gigiplumeria is right about NGA wanting a linked site for purchase for adding to the database. You are also right in your statement as well @drdawg. They should not expect a seedling to be commercially available to the public in large quantities. IMO if you register with PSA, it should be allowed submission to the database without being commercially available. I'm sure that people here would be willing to sell or trade cuttings from their private collections. Not sure about the whole "If we can't have it, you can't name it" policy.

Yes, and I consider my plumerias ATP nka NGA babies. Without NGA, I would never learn to grow these gorgeous plants.

I could have taught you everything you needed to know, Gigi..... Whistling I've been growing and propagating for 30 yr. Only began selling 10 yr. ago though.

Technically you did help Ken, just like new members here, when I first joined in 2013, I knew nothing about growing plumerias from seeds and very little knowledge on cuttings.

You were among the most experienced members and Hetty was the moderator. So I learned from the more experienced members.

Thank you, Gigi. I stayed off the "Plumeria Forum" for several years. I had conflicts that I no longer wanted to deal with (that's why I left Dave's Garden). I never stopped experimenting with my plants though, so during that time away, I continued to add to my knowledge. When I needed to know something about plumeria, something that I thought important, yet simply couldn't be found on the web or from large nursery growers, I contacted botanists and virologists associated with the University of Hawaii. These were all PhD credentialled folks whose speciality was in plumeria. The U of H has probably done more research in plumeria than all other universities combined. These folks always had answers to my questions. I found out long ago that when someone REALLY wants correct information, go to the top of the pecking order. I'm not the least bit timid when it comes to contacting those with more knowledge and/or experience than I have. I know an awful lot about plumeria (and orchids), but there is still lots to learn. An important part of life for me is, and always will be, centered around learning.

Maybe it comes with age or just being brave but I'm so shy I could never contact higher ups like that. It took a lot and some serious desperation for me to even post here. I just wanted my plants to survive and thrive. I always feel like I'm bothering others with my questions. Gaining courage to speak up and speak my mind is something I've been working of for years and I've made a little progress, but still progress.

Gigi, you probably won't believe this (almost no one does), but I'm very shy. When I was a teen, if there were such a diagnosis, I would have been labeled "psychologically or pathologically shy". Now there is a term, "Social Anxiety Disorder". I was beyond shy. I worked and worked on this, needless to say, without medical help. Extremely introverted/shy folks don't ask for help. Having gone through 8 years of college, and then 45 years of dentistry, I knew I had to go beyond my comfort zone. I still have trouble though, particularly if there is any sort of a crowd. I'm fine one-on-one, and will talk someone's head off. Just ask the 100's of visitors I've had over the last 3 yr., those visiting my little nursery..... Whistling I still tend to be a loner and it's difficult for me to make friends. Always has been this way, and (unfortunately) always will be.

Is it bad that mine still aren't dormant? It's been so warm and sunny so I just leave them outside during the day as long as it's above 40. They come in just before dark so they don't get too cold.

No, Victoria, everything is fine. They'll all be in pre-dormancy (at least) and will go dormant. Some varieties go dormant early and some late. This is varietal-dependent. Because all of my 200+ plumeria stay outside, and the fact that we are in our dry season, mine are mostly dormant. Add to that dryness, supplied by Mother Nature, the fact that I've removed loads of leaves, leaves with the slightest bit of rust. That combination results in few leaves. Lots of my plants are actually growing leaves, but those new leaves probably won't get very large. We still haven't had a bit of winter weather here. We remain in the 80's (set a record 87 F last Tuesday and have come close to records every day) and haven't yet hit 50.

I agree with Ken. Enjoy that you still have leaves and blooms Lovey dubby

If they are not growing new leaves, that means they are getting ready for winter dormancy.

I definitely won't complain about the weather. We also set a state record for temps a few days ago and are looking at another few days in the 70-80° range. I'm just appreciating the blooms I'm still getting since I thought there might not be time for some of them.

My plumeria are still doing good and are still awake but I'm running into a serious thrips problem. Every time I spray them down with neem oil it's like more show up. It has been very windy lately, so maybe that's causing it but it seems to be getting worse rather than better. I've been spraying everything down with a neem oil and water mixture about once a week. Any suggestions?

I have not had a lot of experience with thrips but I did with spider mites, when I used to bring outdoor plants indoors.

So I used to blast the leaves with water and been successful getting rid of them that way. And sometimes wiping the leaves constantly with "wet" paper towel.
