Jason, I couldn't agree with you more. I've warned folks for many years not to make the cutting in "green wood", but to always cut in the more mature, older wood. The so-called green cuttings are very prone to rot. I no long frequent here on NGA, posting on several FB groups instead, but I regularly see people posting about using glue and silicone caulk to seal the cuts (not the cut-ends being rooted, but the cuts left on the plant where cuttings were taken or the mid-stem cut ends). I've simply never done this. I just let all those cut-ends seal themselves, knowing that there will be an inch or two of dead tissue to deal with. When that viable tissue is sealed, and generally new tips are growing, I'll take some light shears and trim off the brown, dry, dead tissue until I just reach the viable tissue. That's all I've ever done.
