I've grown and I've propagated 1000's of plumeria over a 30 year period. I've never used "glue" a single time. In my opinion, it's a waste of effort and time. I root 200-300 cuttings every single year. But what do I know?

It was definitely calloused for more than a month and although I gave it a couple days to dry in case it was wet it may still have been wet since it was half an inch deep and was able to collect water. It was becoming a hassle trying to keep it out of the rain and was difficult to predict if it would rain while I wasn't home. That's why for the glue.
Now just trying to figure out where and how to cut so it won't die. It's been a rough month.

The deal to me is that cutting looks green, like newer growth. Typically when people take cuttings, or prune, it's recommended to do it in the "gray"area. Where the branch has hardened off. You will find more times that not, that when you cut in the green it has a harder time healing. Especially when healing at the top.

Jason, I couldn't agree with you more. I've warned folks for many years not to make the cutting in "green wood", but to always cut in the more mature, older wood. The so-called green cuttings are very prone to rot. I no long frequent here on NGA, posting on several FB groups instead, but I regularly see people posting about using glue and silicone caulk to seal the cuts (not the cut-ends being rooted, but the cuts left on the plant where cuttings were taken or the mid-stem cut ends). I've simply never done this. I just let all those cut-ends seal themselves, knowing that there will be an inch or two of dead tissue to deal with. When that viable tissue is sealed, and generally new tips are growing, I'll take some light shears and trim off the brown, dry, dead tissue until I just reach the viable tissue. That's all I've ever done.

I feel like I should clarify, this plant is rooted and has been rooted for more than 18 months. I know I'm making a lot of beginner mistakes. I apologize for that. Hopefully I can fix them and not make too many more.

Victoria, one of the most important aspects of growing plumeria in pots is to make absolutely certain that the potting media is extremely well draining and that the pots' drainage hole are large and open. If you've got these two things in place, I sure wouldn't be worried about rain. Of course, I am assuming that the plants are getting lots of full sun. I've got 400+ potted plumeria, every single one outside and in sun, at least 6 hr. of sun. This is our rainy season, and it's not unusual to get rain almost every day for a week or more at a time. A week ago we got over 6" over a 4 day period. Plumeria are sun and water loving plants. But they don't like "wet feet".

OK, the plant looks fine. Just be sure that you have used approximately 1/3 coarse perlite in that potting soil. I am worried that your plant isn't getting enough sun. Only you will know this. I instruct those who purchase plumeria from me to give their plant(s) at least 6 hr. of sun for best growth and blooming.

It gets about 6-8 hours of direct sunlight and about 2-4 hours of indirect almost everyday. It's also south facing.

Sadly no. The seller never knew exactly what it was. It was a gift to him from a friend that he used to sell cuttings. I just know the color and smell.

Ken - now you've got me rethinking my pot choice for a few rooted plumies Sighing! (Not your cutting though - she's in that black nursery pot)… guess I'll be doing some repotting tomorrow Whistling

I don't know what I said to create questions about your potting, Chantell, but I'm sorry if it's causing you anguish. For those growing long-term in pots, I always recommend the largest pots possible. Far more important is the potting media and the pot's drainage. I under-pot the majority of what I have (1 gal.) simply to slow down the growth. I want to be able to manage the size of my plants, not only to utilize space but also so that I can ship the plants.

Ooops sorry if that came out wrong, Ken. I have the bigger rooted plumies in the types of pots with raised bottom that you can water from below…but the more that I read what you were saying - the more it made sense. If we had a lot of heavy rain that would let a lot of water sit in the bottom of those pots which might make that soil too wet…and then I might sadly be dealing with rot. I will do whatever is needed to avoid that. Again my apologies if it sounded like I was stating something different.

I've been mostly away from NGA, Chantell. I didn't post a single thing for weeks (perhaps months). Therefore, I was mostly unaware of anything that I had posted about pots and their relationship to growing plumeria. The main thing you want to consider is not to allow plumeria (or most any other tropical) to remain in soggy soil.

My presence will be mostly looking, but not responding, Karen. I got very upset with the way Big Bill was treated by the admins of NGA and though I voiced my displeasure to the top of that admin chain, I didn't even get a courtesy response. Thus, in my opinion, the only thing left to do, was to remove myself from the site in protest. I have 10 times the responses on FB as I do on NGA, so for me at least, FB is far more productive.
