Aww sorry to hear that it has made me think twice about getting a mini greenhouse though. Being near the coast we get gusts of up to 100mph at least a few times a winter here, so maybe a cold frame would be more secure
I will have to see what our local hardware stores have as well. Someone also said they always have those greenhouse carports on craigslist with just the frames. Then you could put up some screening or something and make your own greenhouse. I keep looking in my area for things I could use.
I like the idea of the cold frame. Scroll down this link and look at what Wild Ginger Farm does with cold frames. We get so much rain during the winter and spring, this gives them the ability to protect alpine plants from to much moisture. Can also provide some protection for marginally hardy plants in the winter. http://www.wildgingerfarm.com/...
These were what my DH did for me in New Mexico when I was battling to keep the integrity of my semp flats from rodents, intense sun and snow. Basically PVC pipes with shade cloth and on hinges so that the tops swung down or up. Up on rain barrels because of the thirsty animals. The pics from Ginger Farm reminded me of mine from way back...Not as sturdily built but it did the job for 7 years until I moved to sunny CA.
oops here are the pics:
Not sure if you saw Mark's tip of using plexiglass leaned over a bed, or pots to keep out rain, that is probably what I'll do. Its an easy solution and unless there's lots of wind it should do okay!
