Look at what I discovered this morning! I don't usually bend down far enough to look at the "front" of the plant, on a low shelf, usually just see the lowest part at the backside while watering.

Update on made-it-through-winter plant. It's been outside for a while now, but in mostly shade on the porch.

I am itching to kick my plants outside, but it still gets cold here.

I got 5 more of these a couple of months ago and grounded them. A spot with morning-only sun, and a spot with dappled shade most of the day and they are looking really good, noticeably bigger and starting to bloom. I noticed the new ones were in cococoir, not peat. I believe it's making all of the difference in the world that the plants are alive and growing, vs. the usual shriveling and dying that these plants do for me. This is exciting, I've been trying to get just one of these going for years.

Thank you very much! I am so happy about that too, that color seems more unusual. So far, the others are red. Really just so happy THEY seem happy & even blooming. I've been adding red for the past few years to get more hummingbird attention but need more stuff that blooms sooner. By the time my blooms get kickin' the migration is way over. I haven't seen a hummer in about 2 weeks.

Do the hummingbirds go for the geraniums? I never notice anything go for geraniums besides some green caterpillars.

Not that I've seen, but I haven't had a chance to gauge that very much, the way these plants don't usually live long enough to bloom @ my house. I think I would have noticed people mentioning if these plants were a nectar source, and I don't remember any comments like that. But I do hope that more blooms in general would draw attention in general, for hummers to come over & see if there are nectar plants nearby. Is that making any sense?

Almost total shade and consistent moisture seem to have been factors in keeping this plant going since last year. It struggled through the 100+ heat a month ago but it's back to blooming.


Compared to a couple of plants that have had more sun, more dry. This spot doesn't get rained on unless the wind is blowing from the south at the time. They're hard to see, on each end. Mostly just sticks but I think they're still alive. Will find out when it cools off I guess. On the left, there's a bloom but not much else. On the right, just a few leaves.

Add me to the list of 'I don't know what these like." I'm on year 2 with something like Vancouver-Centennial/
with the orange centered leaf. Struggling, blooms on and off on a branch or two, never getting happy.
I thought I had learned that Pelargoniums don't like it hot and dry. OOps.
I just took the thing out of a 10 inch basket and found it in very heavy soil, maybe that was the latest problem. Made cutting, shaped it up, put in more appropriate size pot.

It really seems like this plant is near happy again. My grounded plants can't keep up. Not something I usually do but since I put the Begonia cutting in the pot, I've been bottom-watering. I was just going to do it the first week or so but I noticed how happy everything was and have kept doing it. Clay pots seem to do better with that than plastic.

Maybe geraniums+ clay pot is the trick. Because the ones our grandmas had were probably in clay.
My cuttings have some (tiny) new growth. Still a long ways from sure success- I think they could put out a new leaf even if the bottom of the stem is starting to rot under the soil surface.

The more clay pots I use, the more magic I think they have. And I know what you mean about being tricked about life, appearing above some rotten part.

I cut a few stems and put them in water and they did take root. Over the years, none of the cut stems I put in soil took root, but I'm sure that's possible too.

I won't fight you for your clay pots, my watering habits and time lend me to letting things get too dry. Plastic for me in most cases. But could have kept me from the best case with this geranium. So much to learn about plants! I used to have it in clay ages ago but sunny hot deck, so its not just the pot, and the plant, but the site, and the person!

I just do not understand these plants. There are 3 ground plants still alive and they are starting to show leaf variegation that hasn't been there before.
