The easiest way is to find some suitable rocks.. As the idea of this come from Bonsai on the rock and Angkor Wat temple in Kamboja

Kaktus said:Weekend project, root training.... There are some neglected root training projects in my balcony, might as well finish it..

Actually they are not in a best situation for major cuttings, there are risk that they will not make it...

@Wildbloomers , this is the adeniums that suffer because of using raw cocopeat with tannins, the first picture dated June, it means the first step (amputation) performed in June last year, and I am pretty sure I have performed initial root selection in Dec last year
Thumb of 2021-08-07/Kaktus/9e2aa0

After cleaning the roots from soil, have difficulties to select the roots to keep, normally we need 5 to 6 roots, max 8. This is difficult because a lot of roots are not growing.
Thumb of 2021-08-07/Kaktus/223c64

After selection, still keep more that it should be, will do another root selection in 6 months. The 3 big ones on the left and right are confirmed, but the 3 on tops and 3 at the bottoms are difficult to decide, if the ones in the middle are big enough, then it will be easy, I just keep the middle on the top and bottom, then 5 roots for the plant, but since I am not sure, I keep some backup and select them again in 6 months.
Thumb of 2021-08-07/Kaktus/1219b0

Finished, as though nothing has happened, hope they can survive Smiling
Thumb of 2021-08-07/Kaktus/d689f0

If you guys still remember the above adeniums root training that I trimmed at 7th August..

Will try to repot this in a wider pot, the size of the hexagonal pot is a little bid too big, but thats all I have
Thumb of 2021-12-05/Kaktus/c5a5d6

We are too late to perform this, as the roots are bending and growing inwards..
Thumb of 2021-12-05/Kaktus/a26200
Thumb of 2021-12-05/Kaktus/0cd6ea

Clean and cut all the small roots and repot into the new pot, this will take a while to raise and show the roots

@Kaktus, do you water after your root selection and repot? Or do you wait a few days to water to avoid rot on the cut roots?

Amazing how fast the roots have fattened up since August.

I have some too that I might turn into root training (accidental root pruning) one is Xmas Santa but has a lot of buds right now so I am not going to disturb it. Honey Pie, Sweetie Pie and Velvet Dream/Midnight Wave. I will wait to check on them in early spring since they are now not as actively growing.

I'll wait for 2 to 3 days before I water it.. But since I just put it outside under the table, it will get wet if it is raining.
since there is no much cuts, just clean up some hairly roots, I don't worry much

@ Kaktus, it looks good to me. It probably just need more time for the roots to grow.

You could make the rock yourself. With some heavy duty tools....

hahaha.. No need, the natural / original rocks are easily available here, the mini temple from stone also available. I use statue because I want something different. Maybe one day will make something like this, but the price of the kungfu statue is too expensive.

Surprisingly the video showed some bonsai expert showing the process of making the rocks, I thought the bonsai people will like everything natural, not manmade. Thinking

I ever made a pot from rock, with minimal tools available, this is solid, not the one in the video that is very soft..

Thanks, it is quite fun to make this kind of root trained adeniums, if we have enough plants and time to experiment. Smiling
