It's like 23 pictures in 1! (Because it is.) Stapeliads tend to make really photogenic flowers, with some depth. Fun subjects for camera trickery.

It's harder to capture the details when the subject is moving, but I did get a picture of a visitor to a nearby Kleinia. Quite the mouth parts on this guy.

I learned something by taking that picture (as is often the case with these closeups). What I thought was a regular bee was actually a hoverfly (I think) ... same general size and color scheme, but all sorts of differences. Mainly the face is very different. A google image search (eg. bee face) was very useful to compare the faces of all the potential contenders.

Finally, this is the third day of bloom but I was away for the first 2 days.

Different color than my G. baldanium was. Mine was a vivid scarlet red. Sad about the 'was' part on mine. It was a fatality of the worm attack this summer.

Sorry to hear that Donald. This one has grown since I got it and it has 2 babies so this must have seedpod at one time. This has fuschia undertone, I wonder if it is because it is third day bloom.

Mine faded slightly as the blooms aged, but the base color didn't change.

Oh wow that is nice deep red! I need to buy more of this. I love the scarlet red bloom!
