I know Stupice and Mortgage Lifter. None of the others. When we sell at market we give samples because people always say, I had no idea there were so many varieties. IF THEY ONLY KNEW! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Where is everyone getting their seeds?

This year I AM saving seeds! (I say that every year but never seem to follow through.) This year I'll put the bags in a zip lock bag at the end of the rows so I don't have to walk but up to the garden shed to get them when I want to bag a blossom! Hopefully that will get me to actually do it. I always have trouble keeping the suckers pinched too. Just too many and too many other things to do.

Arlene, the reason you do not recognize some on my list is that I go for things like:
cold hardy
frost resistant,
sets fruit in cooler temperatures

My last few are:
Black Truffle
Dancing with Smurfs
Blue Pitts
OSU Blue
Indigo Blue
Valencia

I tend to keep to cultivars which mature in under 80 days.

Of course! That makes perfect sense. But I did try Stupice. I wasn't a fan though. That was when I was in MD and looking for an early, cold tolerant tomato!

Dancing with Smurfs, what a funny name. I love to hear the history/stories behind some of the varieties.

I've never heard of most of those either Hilarious!
I guess I'm a bit cheap and trying to use seeds that I have on hand, hence the same varieties as past years

At the cost of seeds lately, I don't blame you. Hilarious!

Actually, my son collected/traded seeds for a few years so we have a shoe box size container of just tomato seeds. So we try a few new varieties each year but certain ones that sell really well at market or that we just plain like, we keep doing every year. And we try to save seeds. This year I promised myself to do a better job saving seeds.

I've collected some cold-tolerant, short season tomato seeds , but not yet trialed them.

Would anyone like to try a few?

ULTRA-EARLY & COLD-TOLERANT:
'Glacier' - ultra-early, cold-tolerant, SEMI-DET

EXTRA-EARLY & COLD-TOLERANT:
'Oregon Spring' - extra-early, very cold-tolerant, "plant 4 wks before last frost & protect only when there's frost"

EXTRA-EARLY:
'Ildi' - extra-early, yellow grape pear, 8'-10' INDET

I think I also have extra of these, but I'm not sure:
'Manitoba' - extra-early, cold-tolerant, 3'-4' DET, "Canadian for colder climates"
'Matina' - extra-early, INDET, "dependable even in cold/wet summers"

EARLY:
Taxi - 4-7 oz. blocky - bright yellow - mild non-acid, tangy

I also have extra:
'Black Russian' - Heavy producer - said to be "early"

And another black tomato:
'Vorlon' - OP - Mid-Season 69-80 days - potato-leaf - INDET - Stabilized cross between Cherokee Purple and Prudens Purple

And some:
'Azoychka' - 60-70 days, very early for so large - LEMON YELLOW - 5-10 oz oblate - INDET, reg leaf

I did Glacier last year---but You know what I did to them???
absent minded person that I am---I was pruning the Indeterminates and then got carried away and pruned the Glacier ones.
Not a productive crop!
I am doing them again this year. The few I did get were good and early.

Dumb thing I did, because I usually mark the Determinates with crossed sticks to remind me not to prune them!

Oops!

Rick, I would love to try a few but it's a bit late for me this year. If you still have some seeds next year...

I'll try to remember to offer earlier next year.

I keep hoping some swaps or seed-sharing round robins will be started here in ATP. I'm too much of a procrastinator to start one myself!

The tomatoe and pepper seeds swaps tend to be in the fall.
There is one on the GW every fall.
In fact most of the seed swaps are in the fall.

Heather MacDonald's tomato & pepper swap is where I got 99% of my variety.

When she posts her announcement in GW or Cubits, I echo it here in ATP's Plant and Seed Trading forum:

The thread "Heather's 5th Annual Tomato & Pepper Seed Exchange" in Plant and Seed Trading forum

She does a great job of sorting through what seeds come in, and what people's Wish Lists are. She also lets you say which varieties you DON'T want (for example, those you already have or know you didn't like).

Yes, Heather runs a good swap.
I did not go in this past fall because I am still trying seeds from previous swaps.
