How cold can peony roots that are being shipped stand without getting damaged? I am still waiting on an order. Morning lows may drop to 10 deg F Friday morning.

Laurie, they're very hardy. Several years ago I was waiting for a final box when we had a blizzard with temps that went well below 0°F. It was so cold that our mail box wouldn't even open, frozen shut. 48 hours later when I got the mailbox open I found that my box of peony roots were there waiting for me, had spent around 3 days in a metal box with temps never exceeding 20°…figured they'd be a total loss. Left the box in the garage for the next couple of days until most of the remaining snow and ice melted off, they were fine when I finally got them unpacked.

Jasmin, I've never ordered tree peonies from her but quite a few herbaceous from there were misidentified. They never seemed to be very hardy either, don't think I had any that made the move to AL. I saw that one as well and was tempted, though—the green in the bloom makes for a very unique flower! If I didn't still have several that need to be planted I'd take the chance. It's been several years since I've ordered from PE, if anyone has had more recent and positive experiences I'd certainly be interested in hearing.

Liz, Thank you for sharing your story! That makes me feel much better. My roots came today, and I had an email from Ruud (Warmerdam) that let me know that the roots should be fine. It sounded like there were many delays throughout the shipping process. But at least I now know that peony roots can handle very cold temperatures, and I won't have to worry about late shipping in the future.

I've noticed folks on this forum like to post pictures of their roots. Here are mine. Some of the larger buds might have a little damage, but I think there are plenty of smaller buds that look good, and I think they should do OK next spring. I've had a thick woodchip mulch piled on the planting sites so the ground wouldn't freeze. I will plant in the next day or 2.

Good luck, Laurie! Ruud sends good roots but mine did not survive being potted during winter. I am sure your will be fine planted in soil directly.

I ordered Greenland and could not resist and added White Sands also D'Oh! I grew this peony before but gave away, thought Bu Te would be enough. I like White sands much better than Bu Te. Well, I have to find a place for it now Blinking

Frank your brave to get out and plant in cold weather . Received my order yesterday. To cold and wet to plant. Not as brave as I used to be getting out in freezing weather.
Maybe just a temporary plant in pots in the garage for now . Or just put on my big girl boots and just do it. Thumbs up Maybe tomorrow… Rolling on the floor laughing

Caroline, Alice Harding will ALWAYS be a favorite of mine. The flower is large and on such a small plant, it just looks massive! And it's such a pretty color—if you have a spot that's elevated to plant it I'd do so. The flowers tend to point slightly down and with such a small plant they're hard to see. Mine is right up front on a 3' tall restraining wall so easily viewable. Also blooms very last of the tree peonies for me.
Singling in the Rain was the plant that got me interested in Itohs, love the delicate fade. Will always be a fav.
