Interesting, they used to be quite common but must have fallen out of favor as I have not seen one in a nursery in years.

Thank you! That's good to hear. I've only been in a store with plants twice this year. On a good year, I might shop 8 times. So out of 365 days in a year, the odds of seeing anything in particular are not good.

But, on the other hand, I love it when it seems like everything is different. That's why I go, to get something else, from what I already have. I never shop for anything in particular, just to see what they have.

Couple half moons and white trim from shrubs , bamboo and trees in the garden.
Always enjoy all the interesting pics of foliage. Foliage is just as important in our gardens as flowers. Imagine a floral arrangement without foliage to show off the flowers. Trees and shrubs are the bones or building blocks of the garden.

First pic..The black bamboo has all gone to flowering this season. A exceedingly rare event. It is not clearly understood why bamboo all flower throughout the garden in totally different sections far from each other at the same time. Bamboo's only flower at intervals between 30 and 100 years. The flowers are tiny and inconspicuous, yet the flowering cycle has left a two tone effect across the bamboo borders a rare event ordinarily never seen next to the rare black bamboo culms.
They will all die now after this flower cycle after 30 years in the garden. Saving seed.
This is the flower ting drops like tears dropping from each section.
Flowering cycle theory.

Sherry .. Thank You! for taking the time to read about this bambooโ€ฆit was quit a shock to find all the bamboo on the property blooming at the same time and will be gone after flowering. Will miss it and hoping to replant from seed soon. It looks so strange in flower. It stayed in it's designated area never traveled like other bamboos.
Plants sometimes do have their interesting secrets โ€ฆ

I know there are several Black Bamboos and certain ones are clumpers. I saw them at a garden in Hawaii. I did not know that about the blooming either. Very interesting.

Very lovely bloom at that bamboo Bea.
Aren't they perennial and will set shoots yearly.? The flowering stem will die, but new shoots will grow, thats how I know all bamboos are, like perennial grass.
Never have bamboos in my garden blooms though.
I love bamboos, they are versatile for their woods, both the small species and large one. My favorite bamboo are Dendrocalamus asper, but not for ornamentals, we grow them for the edible shoots.
There are bamboos at my country that people gather seeds after flowering. They very rarely blooms, but flowering will be massive, and produce quite lots of seeds, they will be process into rice.

This black bamboo is hardy in my zone. You couldn't kill it back if you tried. It is the
Phyllostachys nigra , have had it for many years it's the clump type and stays in it's designated area . It's always green year round and sends up news shoots in spring.
It's been very handy having bamboo around making stakes, fencing, etc.

Tofi dendro's are the largest bamboosโ€ฆdo you grow them or ant type? You could build a city with themโ€ฆ
Oh Yes โ€ฆ your country has many bamboos and the perfect climate. And the many blessings that come when bamboos finally flower and go to seed is a huge undertaking just gathering all the seed. I haven't begun to harvest any yet โ€ฆ it's to hot. But I brought some culms in to admire and dry for floral displays. Can't waste this rare phenomenon and will save all I canโ€ฆand replant.
Since this bamboo went to seed it's a bit sad ๐Ÿ˜ž loosing a beautiful plant after so many years but also very interesting. In all the years I have had this bamboo this is the first time they all flowered at all as they were planted in several different areas and made great screens from wind and pollen debrie. It's like they were all on the same clock and sent me a real wake up call.

Oo-oo a runner black bamboo.. what kind ? โ€ฆ. have you planted the runner with a barrier to keep it in check? Or.. Is it in a stand on it's own? Or pots? The color black is very striking when they mature. They add a lot of interest and beauty in any garden.

Yes Bea, I have an area designated for Bamboos and fruit trees near the forest, D asper is the only non ornamental bamboo I grow. The culms are very useful for building material, and the shoots are among the tastiest in my opinion, especially when harvest fresh.

We also grow a variegated Dendrocalamus, here is a half moon leaf (only one leaf tho๐Ÿ˜, among their white stripey foliages)

Other smaller Bamboo is suitable for garden and very handy indeed when we need staking material.
I grow small Phillostacys nigra in pots and planing them for living stakes in pots for climber such as Gloriosas.
