For me, 'Shipshape' comes up to be as close to a clear medium blue as any. The buds start out as a deep "Blue Ribbon blue" before opening out. This pic makes it look a bit more 'purplish' than it appears in the garden. I really wish that I had a really good bud shot because that IS indeed BLUE.

As for 'no blue flowers', I invite whoever said that to visit my Texas bluebonnets next spring... or just drive along any Texas highway (Ennis, TX is highly recommended!) and see if you still feel the same!

And that's what's so frustrating, because I can NEVER seem to capture anything in the blue family very accurately.

I have the same trouble when photographing Texas bluebonnets. The older flowers or those that have been pollinated by bees have a red signal patch, whereas fresh flowers have a white signal. The older flowers with red or red-violet patches tend to make the bonnets look more purple even in the field, but when you really get up on them, you can see that they are indeed very blue. Pics only make it worse, it seems. That 'Shipshape' is more blue in person than it shows here on my screen, which is why I made the opening "disclaimer". Plus, I do believe that we all perceive colors a little differently from person to person. Indeed, to your eye it may look more "violet-ish", while to the friend who gave me 'Shipshape', it may appear more blue, and to me, it may fall somewhere in between. Then there are the differences in how our monitors render colors. On my desktop, many of these other "blue" irises look very purple, as in royal purple fit for a king, but on the laptop, they look different, and on my phone, they do look more blue. Even lighting spectrum can make colors appear different... pure white light, vs. light with a warmer color from yellow or red wavelengths, vs. cooler light with more blue wavelengths, all of that changes how we might perceive a color. And if someone has an early cataract, it can make colors appear a bit dull which you may never even notice until you eventually have cataract surgery and all of a sudden... it's like going from "regular TV" to Hi-Def.

Many factors go into how we perceive color. It's really fascinating stuff... sorry about all that. I married an electrical engineer and this is a big part of his type of work, LOL! 😁

I don't know if you would consider a dwarf bearded iris, but I just had a new one bloom for me that is a beautiful blue. Seems close to a true blue! There is one photo that shows it darker and more purple, so it may not be the same color in all locations or all conditions.

That is a beautiful little guy. Yeah I would buy it! Lovey dubby

Just a note on blue from a watercolorist and fellow blue lover:
Try planting blue's compliment color, orange/peach next to it to bring out the blue to the eye rather than yellow, which is the compliment to purple.
As a fellow gardener, I have too been on a permanent search for true blue flowers.
Blue Plumbago, blue Amsonia and Blue Mist Spirea are blues with no red to their coloring. This is a great thread and thanks to all!

Another way to make your blue irises appear more blue to your eye is to plant a truly royal purple iris next to it that is in the same bloom season ( that will be the real trick, and if you find one, by all means , let us know). Titans Glory, Paul Black, Dusky Challenger, etc. are very purple for example.

I agree.
I can say that, in my view, Adriatic Waves reads very blue next to Fathom (light blue) and Superstition
