We came from here
The thread "Our Orchid Blooms in May 2022 🌸" in Orchids forum

It is June 1. and here we go with a new thread for the month.
Let me start with my Gongora galeata. This one doesn't get huge, it is a very nicely manageable plant.

The plant has a small hitchhiker, Amorphophallus konjac!! Smiling

And one of my older Miltoniopsis surprised me this Spring with a bunch of spikes.

That Odette's Beauty is one huge flower!!

That Gongora galeata just reminds me of butterscotch and honey, two of the sweetest things around. Just a wonderful start to a new month! Thumbs up Lovey dubby

Wow, Lila really is a "10" isn't she. Just beautiful.

The little Amorph 'tree' looks cute in that orchid pot but . . . might be a problem when it starts growing a tuber. Right now it's supplying some nice shade to the plant, though.

So happy this morning that I don't have to water anything. We finally ! got a really good long heavy rain last evening and everything looks happy and perky today. I have nothing but purples to show, and can't download at the moment. Confused

Oh, I will remove the hitchhiker!
A couple of years ago I repotted my Amorphophallus, I should say the "thousands" of little tubers.... Some rolled away and I was also repotting some other stuff at the time.

Ursula; For 2 years my Amorphophallus konjac hasn't produced a bloom. Only the Huge leaf. Last year it measured almost 36" tall, this year looks like it's going to be around 24" unless it starts growing.

I've used different fertilizers & kept it slightly moist after the nubbin broke through the soil... I planted it DEEP around 12" in the pot (like your supposed to).

It's situated on my South facing concrete porch protected from Hot Sun. The Corm was around 5" across originally. When dug up last Fall the "New" corm was smaller & still had remnants of the original corm attached to the base... so I didn't disturb and replanted in same pot.

Am unable to plant in the ground, thus the big 14" jardinière .

suggestions?

Glenn, for years I just seem able to grow truly hand-full loads of plants of different sizes. Now last year I popped one of the planters into the front border, also a South facing house wall. I was hoping for better growth year around outside! My parallel pots/planters are just starting to show tips, nothing showing up in the garden yet.
I could use lots of advice here too! Smiling
I do know how to grow pretty leaves....

A couple of judges that I know well out of the NE center are both curators of tropical plants. One is at the Bronx Botanical Garden while the other is at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.
I remember them saying 2 things about this type of plant. They seem to bloom when they are good and ready and two, they applied a lot of fertilizer to them. All of the fertilizer came directly from the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn or the Bronx Zoo across the street in the lower Bronx.
And I mean lots of fertilizer!! The richer and stinkier the better.
That's all I got!! I tip my hat to you.

I don't remember which animals but likely bison, giraffe, water Buffalo, elk, deer, who knows!
I know that both places used to sell "Zoo Doo"! Maybe they still do.

Bill; I've used Fish Emulsion & Bat Guano along with 20-20-20 . The soil mix is fast draining even added used orchid bark to the mix.

Guess I need some Lions, Tigers & Bears dung next. ha

The one that I saw in bloom at the Bronx Zoo was in a rubbery planter thing that was roughly the same dimensions as a dump truck tire.
Oh, I should have said the one I smelled in bloom!!!

Wonderful start to the month Ursula!
Seeing your pictures of Milt. Lila Fearneyhough '#10', makes me sad that we can't grow them here in Florida . This one of yours is just loaded with spikes and buds! Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Lovey dubby

I am sure envious of your rain and overcast sky. We have been bone dry forever it seems and there is nothing on the horizon, not even the typical afternoon showers. Sad

Oh, please do, we are dusty here. They keep talking about "isolated thunderstorms" but we have not seen any yet so I am not optimistic.

I can't get enough of this Spathoglottis Lemon Kiss. I have always loved having a vase full of daffodils on the table and this looks like them but is even better, the flowers last for months.

I picked up two Laelia purpurata a few months ago from Stony Hill Orchids. The vinicolor is the first one to open a spike.
