Every single day you ladies never fail to amaze me with your growing skills! I bow down to your excellence. Your ability to flower orchids is uncanny.
Elaine, that Den. Maui Sparkle is a wonderful plant. Can you get it to judging? That is an award winner in my book. Plain and simple. There are only 4 awards to the hybrid, 2 of which went to a single plant, an AM of 86 points and a CCE of 93 points for a plant with 221 flowers on 11 inflorescences! And YES, I know it is more then your plant but I would argue, AND WIN, that yours deserves a CCM somewhere in the mid 80's in terms of points. Now I realize that you are not a fully committed person when it comes to judging orchids but I just wanted to have everyone here recognize your accomplishment and growing skill!! ( I should have been committed years ago!!!
) That is just a wonderful achievement!!!!
I tip my cap!
Now for Ursula and her Cattleya purpurata, that plant was (is) deserving of a culture award. Forget flower counts, forget flower size, but a Culture Award does not go to the plant and it goes to the grower. And in your case, like Elaine's, that was just a tremendous job flowering that plant. I tried to count how many flowers it had on it but that really doesn't matter, just one look SCREAMS TO ME, WHAT A GREAT JOB OF GROWING!!!! I tip my cap to you too.
Just as a note, Cattleya purpurata is one of the, if not the, most awarded species with over 400 awards worldwide, 226 AOS awards alone!!!! But with 27 cultural awards in the US, I would argue, and successfully I might add, that you personally, were deserving of a culture award. I remind judges constantly that culture awards recognize superior culture no matter if its this number of flowers or that number of flowers. They, judges, sometimes get too bogged down in the size and numbers of things. They should easily, and correctly recognize, a WELL GROWN PLANT!!! And that is a well grown plant!
I will step down now from my soap box.
Much LOVE to both of you ladies!!
