I heard back from Charlie this morning. He's been in a convalescent care hospital - probably what we would call a step down unit here in the states. His son is picking him up this Friday after work.

He's made lots of friends and is somewhat sad to leave them all.

He did say he got his non-Nora Leigh phloxes cut back before his surgery and hopes it's not too cold to do some more tidying up in the garden when he gets home.

I told him you were all asking about him and asked him to check in when he can.

fyi... Green Grin!

How is your recovery going, Charlie?

A question about Nora Leigh, does that go dormant? The leaves are still fresh on one and a half out of three plants. And the one where the leaves died back, the stems are still green. Meanwhile, my other phlox are dormant. Except for the wood phlox which is still green.

Maintenance of Perennial Beds.
Lots of thanks to Vic and to All.

Currently mild here, but gardening done for the year. As Vic said, did have a great time in convalescent care, but it did stop me from closing down the flower beds before winter sets in. Recovering well (thanks), but had to get some help in raking maple leaves off part of the back. Next spring, will certainly get the edging done by the landscaping maintenance guys. Think (at 80) that's now getting beyond me. Got to make the gardening more manageable!

Think Mike and myself have long been admirers of Phlox 'Nora Leigh'. Have had five, I think, different Phlox cultivars with variegated leaves, but 'Nora Leigh' has proven to be the real survivor among them. Perhaps, that's a reason it's the one I've seen, over the years, most frequently for sale here.

As Vic said, I had cut back all our garden/tall phlox, except the Nora Leigh, before the knee surgery. By the time I was released, the Nora Leigh, the latest and longest flowering garden phlox in our garden, had finished flowering, so I cut it back to ground level.

Loretta, I'm not sure about when and if the Nora Leigh stems go dormant here. True that Nora Leigh is very mildew resistant in our garden, but I still cut it back down to ground level, before winter, as with all the other summer and fall blooming perennials: that with phlox powdery mildew in mind and also to expose the spring flowering perennials to light and rain during fall).

Thanks, Vic.

One other garden/tall phlox, with variegated leaves, that I've seen for sale here over the last three years: 'Goldmine Improved': this was the third year in our garden. Left side. Sorry picture's not so great.

The variegation is yellow-green, more than white-green. I do prefer the magenta-pink flower colour: Have sometimes felt that the flower colour in Nora Leigh is a bit anemic/washed out.

It's been quite mild here during the days and, currently, the only snow left is in shaded areas and where snow had been piled up.
Last Friday, about a month ahead of last year.
