Mary Ann, I just post some pics on Craig's List, and people call for an appointment. I dig them fresh as they look through pictures and choose. That way there's no prep necessary, and it's much less time consuming. I tried the one day plant sale, and it took days to prepare, and I got poor results. By thinning that way, I don't have to divide as often. Later on when I had to divide and replant some, I had some already dug, and gave people a good buy on them. I have had people come from 200 miles away and buy $20. worth. I always throw in some extras. Some people come back every year. One lady came from Kansas City last year and bought $50. worth. That's a lot of irises at $2. each. I still threw away a bunch, but much less. You have to know where your cultivars are though, so that they get the right ones. I always invite people to come and brouse when they are in bloom, so that they can see what they might want. Of course you always get the nut cases calling to chat for a long time, and then they don't show up. Think they are desparately lonely people just wanting to talk to someone. Ususally get one or two of those.
