Alex, the weather is so weird. Yesterday was like a beautiful Spring day and tomorrow morning there is a chance of frozen precipitation!

I just hope Spring doesn't ruin everything with late freezes.

LG, that is gorgeous new peony growth, hate that it happened in Nov! Hate seeing that but will probably see evidence of the same thing when I go to AL in Dec. Do you think the pot trick can possibly protect the growth until spring? Certainly worth the experiment, hope it succeeds!

Liz, I have used this method before and it worked!

Let's hope that none of your peonies have emerged in AL. We have been unusually warm for a couple of weeks, so I
imagine Alabama has been too.

I hope you will let us know what you find when you get to AL in December.

I will definitely let you know, wouldn't be surprised if some did sprout. It was down below freezing there last night so anything that did try to grow will probably be brown and shriveled when I get there.

We have had below freezing at night, and up to 50's during the day for the last few weeks. I have five peonies I just put in the ground a few weeks ago. Covered with soil and leaves. Guess I should pull the leaves back to see if anything is emerging. I have about 13 more in my son's garden (they were shipped directly to him by a friend so only a few days between digging and planting. I need to get them moved to my house so I can keep an eye on them. Hate to move them again.

They should be dormant so moving now is ideal.

My order from Peony USA arrived.
While the roots are all healthy….
I am disappointed because I specifically ordered on January 1st
thinking that I would get what I ordered.
I had ordered two Itohs…Hillary and Julia Rose.
They sent The Fawn and Caroline Constable instead.
I don't have those so the substitution is fine…but ???
I also ordered and they sent Lemon Chiffon and Angel Cheeks.

They have since refunded the cost of the order.

Adelman's Black Friday order came on Wednesday, the box was pretty beat up but everything was packed tight and fine. Just plant them down today. I kind of wish Greenland was slightly bigger but the eyes are very nice.

Side note: I am REALLY digging the new Adelman tags, it's such a nice extra touch.

Very nice roots everyone! I look forward to the spring blooms

Caroline, did you indicate substitutions would be okay? It's lucky that you didn't already have the two they substituted, but substituting a herbaceous for an Itoh is a little much.

Still trying to turn this horrible soil into something good for peonies. Added lots of leaves and some composted manure. But it still looks like sand. Yuk. Alaska soil is so much more wonderful. Will add a few bags of good garden soil and rototill it all in. Hope to do it tomorrow. Poor peony roots will be so confused.

Mary, peonies will adjust, no worries. When I plant roots that I receive from Adelman's or other places (I know at least at Adelman's the soil is much-much better than ours) the first year flower is sometimes different form what I get later. They adjust to new conditions pretty good.

Yes substituting the herbaceous for the Itoh is a bit much when I ordered so early.
They have since sent a refund .

This year I will do Parkland and maybe Adelman.
Unless I see a deal!
I am thinking of White Wings and Flame for Part shade location.
And maybe Alertie or some other early for a strip that gets good morning light ,but less as day goes on.

They probably thought that the Itoh Caroline Constable was so rare and precious that it would cover the price difference for the other peony that they substituted.
