Even with the cage, I would still manage to sting myself. Giving him the benefit of doubt for now, but I think we need to hear a little more about this guy and other plants he might have. Not sure 1 dangerous caged plant equals a gardener. He could just be nuts! LOL!

Oh wow! I was first thinking why don't they just eradicate the tree. Only one type of iguana can eat the fruit and live in the tree, and it sounds like it's not their only source of food or habitat. How do they manage to make furniture from it?

We saw that on Curacao- the warning sign.

Why not eradicate? "It provides excellent natural windbreaks and its roots stabilize the sand, thus retarding beach erosion."

In one paragraph, it says the wood has been used for furniture for centuries. In another it says "Neither Fruit or Wood is of any use, that I can learn." So which is it? And "although the fruit is potentially fatal if eaten, no such occurrences have been reported in the modern literature." but one fruit can kill 20 people.
Just saying when there are statements that seem to contradict in one article, I become a little skeptical. --- but NOT skeptical enough to take ANY chances with that one myself!

Yes to the snow comment. And you love a good soaking rain.
Plant it and they will come.

They contradict because the website creator at Warner Tree Service (the original link) cut and pasted from Wikipedia out of context and left out a critical line:

Nicholas Cresswell, in his journal entry for Friday, September 16, 1774, mentions:
The Mangeneel Apple has the smell and appearance of an English Apple, but small, grows on large trees, generally along the Seashore. They are rank poison. I am told that one apple is sufficient to kill 20 people. This poison is of such a malignant nature that a single drop of rain or dew that falls from the tree upon your skin will immediately raise a blister. Neither Fruit or Wood is of any use, that I can learn.

Sloppy plagiarism.

Another factoid: The tree is recorded as the world's most dangerous tree by Guinness World Records

I think they mean you can tell they're disgusting because you grow your own and you know what good tomatoes (home grown) taste like. nodding

If your husband gives you a dump truck load of compost for your birthday, you better be a gardener, or your husband is in deep doo-doo. Fortunately, I am a gardener!

and..my porch is in danger of collapsing. I have a friend[he's a builder] who will be doing the excavation with the help of his masonary guy. He wants to do this asap to stay ahead of the winter weather. I agree. My house is older, soon to be 100 and the porch really needs help as the block walls are shifting forward. I have to secure a hefty loan quickly. And what am I worried about? My panicle hydrangeas that live in front of the porch. Am I CRAZY? Heck yeah.
