Milked last night and this morning. Have to go tonight yet too. Close by, only 3 miles so not like I have to leave 45 minutes before. LOL

Was raining when I got up at 5:30, then it thundered and lightninged before we left. Pretty much rained most of the time we were at the farm. At least this will give the 500 crown vetch "crowns" a good start.

I need a nap. Green Grin!

I was planning to shred the front paddock and the "yard" yesterday. I made one pass around the fence line when the u-joint on the shredder broke. I spent the rest of the afternoon taking it apart so that I can get replacement parts. If things didn't break, I could be so much more productive! The good news: the pipe I repaired has remained leak-free... Farming isn't so much about plants and animals, it's about repairing broken stuff.

Yes, Porkpal, it's always something! I think the majority of farms limp along with machinery that is past it's expected useful life. The parts guys do a good business!

Kathleen, thanks for the update on the family. My prayers will continue for all of them and for you.

Our weather has been showery for the past few days. We haven't received much rain, but it's been slow so is all soaking into the ground. It's just amazing how quickly parched looking plants will green up after a little rain.

We had 4 3/8 inches of rain overnight. Stan was up for an hour trying to get the barn drain to work. He said this morning that he might have to tear up part of the barn floor to get it to work right. O, joy unending.

I just walked down to the pond to look at the ducks and had 6 little heifers were following me like baby ducks. From a distance, it probably looks cute, but up close, it's a little scary. They are faster than I am and run up my heels! Stinkers.

lol, apparently, I'm not very scary. I kept turning around, waving my arms, yelling, and they just kept coming. My family isn't be surprised by that - the only time I ever scared anyone was once when a neighbor boy was walking by and I sneezed. He started running as if the devil was after him. I do have a scary sneeze.

Kathleen, yes, it would have been funny to watch. Obviously they don't take you seriously. You could take along a little pill bottle of pepper, and when they get close, breathe some of it and sneeze at them. Or, tie a plastic grocery bag to a long stick and wave it at them when they get too close.

Our car was badly wounded by a deer darting in front of it yesterday. It just came out of nowhere as they often do. The deer was thrown up and sideways, but limped off using all 4 legs. Thank God it wasn't directly in front of me because that could have sent it through the windshield. Repair shops love deer, me, not so much.

Mary, ouch. glad no one was hurt, except the deer, of course. Melissa was saying yesterday that someone told her he'd given a ride home to one of his volley ball players who lived out this way years ago and at least 7 different kinds of animals ran out in front of him on the way. I think the scariest thing I ever had run out into the road was a black bear. Fortunately, it was on the open side of the road going to the woods on the other side and we could see it coming. Bears don't look both ways, nor do they slow down!

I've sneezed at heifers, but they were decidedly unimpressed. It used to make sense that they followed me - I fed them, but these girls don't really know me. I guess I just look friendly.

Yesterday, every time Stan went out to rake up the hay that was mowed the day before, it would shower. The last time, he just kept raking. He chopped up 3 loads, one before supper and two after. Melissa called and wondered if we could come up for supper. It was Erin's 7th birthday and she was feeling that there hadn't been much made of it. I made a graham cracker crumb no bake chocolate cookie cake with totally melted frosting letters that said Happy Birthday Erin. I didn't have any cocoa so I used baking chocolate and 1/2 the butter. I can't use peanut butter so I threw in about 3/4 of a cup of chocolate chips. I used old fashioned oats in the cookies, broke some graham crackers up in the bottom of the pan, poured the hot cookies over it and Erin said it was the best birthday cake ever. She's not really a very tough critic - if it's chocolate, it's good. I told her I'd write down the recipe and call it Erin's No Bake Graham Cracker Crumb Birthday Cake.

Boy, is THAT a mouthful to say for a 7 year old.

Rain here too yesterday and a damaging wind along with it. Blew over our grain holding tank that was a little ways away from the grain dryer. It holds 1,000 bushels of corn, so not a small tank. Wonder how "WE" will get that set back up again???

I got the new (used) part back on the shredder with some difficulty and got about half of the area planned shredded yesterday PM. I hope I can finish it today, but I also have to install a new float valve on a water trough in the north pasture. I need to be efficient so that I can get to the important work of planting the new roses I bought on sale the other day.

Kathleen, what a unique birthday cake! Three cheers for chocolate!

A while back I heard an ad for something on RFTV or somewhere similiar, might have been radio, one of those "what do you want to be when you grow up?" things. The kid answered that maybe he would be a veterinarian, or an economist, or a mechanic, or a conservation expert, etc. And the interviewer said, "oh, then you want to be a farmer."

Anna's grain bin problem is now an engineering project.

Oh, I guess that won't be as much as a project as I thought it was going to be. He is going to tell DS#2 that works at the welding shop to tell his boss when he is in the area with one of his cranes to stop in and set it back up again. He has a crane business on the side. DS isn't involved with that, mostly because he doesn't want to be. LOL It would involve a CDL to drive it plus attending schools, etc for the safe operation of said cranes. He would rather stay back in the shop and weld.
