As a teenager, I belonged to a cycling club. I had a Claude Butler bike with "all the gear." Living in Surrey, Brighton was less than forty miles away.
In the summer whilst still at school, occasionally a friend and I would cycle down there on a Saturday, sleep under the pier with other cyclists, then cycle home on Sunday afternoon. I was seventeen when I bought my first car, but still rode my bike for a couple of years.
So I've always been interested in cycling, particularly track cycling.
But there are far more road racing events televised on Eurosport. I watch many of these too. Recently there was one televised in Majorca and currently one in Italy. Most of the races are on less popular roads as the domestic traffic has to be stopped.
They use a helicopter to video much of the race. I like looking at the scenery. Mountains, lakes, rivers, farms, orchards, vineyards and lots of old architecture.
What is noticeable is how good is the surface of what are effectively many, "B roads" far superior to most similar roads in this country.
There's "Euro money" for you.
Maybe that's a bit unfair, as these roads won't have utility pipes and cables under them, as we do here, where the suppliers, "regularly dig them up in turn."
I didn't bother with the Saudi road race last week.
