Smart cookie ;-very practical the way you minimize losses. I'm so tired of reading conflicting info on plumeria "how -tos", think I'd rather watch actual experiences and results, like yours.

Here is an update, I'm definitely seeing an inflo from my First grafting experiment, this is a trimark grafted to a Hausten White.

And if successful, you'll have ...only a trimark :
(Congratulations, btw!!!

Thank you Cyra! Yes, this graft did not have any growth below the graft. So I think I will have a trimark bloom on a hausten white branch.

The reason I phrased my post that way, is because in successful grafts, scions "take over " (I.e. become) the parent plant. So...depending on where you grafted your Trimark cutting, you'll either have a grafted Hausten White rainbow -tree, or..a grafted Trimark plumeria.
(If I'm understanding the way grafting works, correctly).

I see, this is a trimark in one of the branches of a Hausten White, so I guess this will be a Hausten White rainbow tree. I grafted a DSP and another white King Kalakua too. If successful, I will add more but it is too hot now, I'm afraid new grafts will just shrivel and not take hold.

You will find over time that some of the varieties will outgrow others, many people have tried to create these Rainbow trees but in the end it is not all that successful. I hope yours works out better.

Matching growth habits of the scions can be tricky...so one doesn't end up with a lop -sided tree, but ive seen a picture of a beautiful tree in Thailand, the tree is over a 100 years old, with over 80 different cultivars. And there's a fellow in Oahu who's grafted dozens of varieties onto a tree over a 20-year time span....
(You can find pics of these trees in the book "Frangipani " by Linda Ross, Lorna Rose, and John Stowar. It can be done over time, with careful consideration of ones scions.

That's a good info to know Hetty. my grafting experiment is just what it is... an experiment. I didn't think it will be successful but it satisfies my own curiosity :).

If I later on decide to make a real rainbow tree, then I will pay attention to (quote Cyra) "matching the growth habits of the scions".

I suspect your tree will be lovely. I hope. I do nearly ss we'll when I try my hand at first time grafting, next spring. I still have a few years (I think!) before I have the right tallish, straight, graft -stock, to serve as host for my "steno -babies". And I only have (3) of them...so there wont be any room for error.
I hope you post a pic of tat inflow when it blooms, Gigi.

I will Cyra :), trimark is my favorite for so many reasons. It is my very first plumeria, the Mother plant was given to me by our good friend and former neighbor...Suzy and Dale. Heavy bloomer, beautiful colors and fragrant. The only downside is it gets really tall.

Yes...I know it gets tall. Most of my fave plumeria are "off-limits " to me, for this reason, unless I want to constantly ("down -graft "is the term, I think). Unfortunate, but I'm still grateful for those smaller ones that I can grow, and for the knowledgeable growers who introduce me to them. Life's not perfect (good thing, too, or what would we have left to strive for?), but it can still be very beautiful and rewarding... nodding
And your trimark is strikingly lovely, I'm glad you posted pics, so I can enjoy it, too!

Just a quick update, in case someone finds this thread. The only surviving graft I have now is the 2 inches 3-tip Dwarf Pink Singapore. (It has definitely grown since). The rest, including my trimark, which is showing an inflo, did not take hold and are rooting in cups.

So, no grafting for me this year, maybe I will leave grafting to experts for now. So unfortunately, my dream of having a rainbow tree will just remain...a dream Whistling Whistling Hilarious!

For now, Gigi? (That sounds so final!) I think I will hedge my bets on my stenobabies, and try to get more seed for them before attempting to graft my only 3 babies onto a seedling.

Hetty, do you know what type of cut Luc used to create your tree for you? (I may have asked this already, but if so, I've forgotton your response...)
Thank you!

Luc always used a slant cut.
