Thanks, both of you.
kimkats, I have 3 kitties (going for 5 when I find some NFCs). You?

Pittsburgh is just across the border (and a skinny sliver of West Virginia) from Ohio.
I'll go have a look at the page you mentioned.

This page: http://daylilydiary.com/ is a little cumbersome to weed through when you are brand new and don't know any names.

It reminds me of when I first moved to Pittsburgh where nobody speaks "map" and everyone gives directions by landmark - often a landmark that "used to be" there.....

It does seem extensive though, and I will sit down with it when I have more time.

That's about what I thought. There's a daylily farm in/near Baltimore, OH (slightly southeast of Columbus)... my aunt has bought daylilies from there, and was happy with them. And central Ohio isn't that different from Pbgh, weather-wise.

I can't guarantee this is the place, but I'm pretty certain it must be, since it's on Poplar Creek in Baltimore, and I vaguely remember my aunt saying that's where she went. Google maps says it's about 3 hours from Pbgh, but that would depend on which side of Pbgh you're on.

It is pretty extensive. Charlotte does a good job, though, of keeping a comprehensive listing of daylily "people" on that site.

I looked down through the list and I see the Zolock's listed. They used to come to a symposium that I helped put on in Cleveland a few years ago. They are very knowledgable and I am sure would be helpful to you in finding local sources, clubs, gardens etc. They might not have a "general listing" online of lower priced daylilies for sale from other people, but I bet they have some in their garden. I think they would be an excellent first step to contact in your area. Google shows that they live south of Pittsburgh.

edited to add - Mary's link - I have not been to Daylily Lane and I don't really know why since I live so close and I know the owners well. The wife is Dr. Patricia Henley, PhD that writes many articles for the Journal on plant biology and disease. She used to be my state nursery inspector before she retired. Her husband posts here on ATP and on DG as "poplarcreek" I understand that they have a huge selection of daylilies.

I have been collecting daylilies since last October and I have never seen a Display Garden, hopefully I will locate one before they fade away like last year. October was too late to go looking. Sad
I gave gotten a lot of daylilies from the Lily Auction, got some great deals and it gave my garden a good start, I purchased from Blueridge, Mike144Mann, Abundantdaylilies, and lots of others, you can check out LA sellers thread and see some nice pictures. I also purchased from several people on the daylily forum and all were wonderful, you can lurk or just ask about their screen names on LA. Besides that I love several websites Maryott's, Floyd Cove and Marietta's. These people will give you advice also if you call them, they are just wonderful to work with and the have fabulous daylilies. A lot of times Maryott's has BOGO and he was the first person I ever ordered from when I goggled a flower I saw on the internet.
If you see something you like, be sure to look it up in the database to be sure it meets your requirements. You can read about the different types like dormant, evergreen and semi-evergreen and make your decisions from there. Also the database will tell you about which time of the year that it blooms, late, early, mid. The height of the scapes in inches, and also the flower it self. It is a wealth of information and also pictures and comments from gardeners.
Well there is my two cents worth, good luck with your new garden!

"PoplarCreek" knows my aunt (well, almost anyone in that town knows my aunt - she's lived there for 45 years and is a force in the community). Big Grin Anyway, my aunt says that when the DLs are blooming there, it's a beautiful sight. She's been very happy with the DLs she's bought from them.

fiwit - Daylily Lane is definitely the best organized catalog I've seen since I started shopping.

I used to be quite fond of Amador Flower Farm, but they are in zone 9 and I am not anymore.

And y'know, I'm just a hobby gardener. I don't care who hybridized it or when, what category it fits in, or even if it's evergreen since it wouldn't be evergreen hare anyway. I like daylilies because they are easy care, easily multiplied and divided, and I will choose the ones I think are pretty.... It IS nice to have access to less common ones than you'd get at Home Depot though!

Same with irises, daffodils, and asiatic lilies.

I want to have the garden swamped with easy care perennials by the time I'm 60. (Only 5 seasons to go!) My lower back is already weak. I JUST turned the corner on getting rid of the "problems" in the yard and am rarin' to proceed with the pretty part!

If you are looking for companion plants for daylilies, The Lily Garden in Oregon
has top notch Orienpet and Oriental lily bulbs. They are a little more expensive, but are top quality. ( forgot to mention that Jim Murphy put me on to this place years ago. He knows his plants)
http://thelilygarden.com/

Ramona TItus also sells lily bulbs on the lily auctions and hers are excellent quality. She is located in Maine and sells
under the user name "Farway Flowers." She also has a Facebook page.

Brent and Becky's bulbs here in VA is my favorite place to buy spring flowering bulbs. Top notch!
Here is their link: https://store.brentandbeckysbu...

I have bought hard to find perennials many times at Bluestone Perennials in PA. Others have mentioned them.

Hostas Direct has a good selection of hostas and heucheras, if you buy the "plugs" they will be small but healthy.
Here's the link :http://www.hostasdirect.com/about-us/about-hostasdirect/

I have also ordered heucheras from a place in NY called Eminence Meadows. I just checked their site ( its been about 3-4 years since I ordered. Their selection is WAY down from what it used to be so don't know what is going on with that. But their plants were good.)
http://www.eminencemeadows.com...

In the past couple of years, fortunately, two local ( good quality) nurseries have started carrying some of the more hard to find heucheras and other perennials. If you can buy locally, you usually can get larger plants and save on shipping. So maybe check with your local gardeners to see if you have any good local sources.

Thanks floota - lots of good leads there.
The only one I already heard of is Brent & Becky's, where I plan to shop for bulbs.

I was pleased with Hostas Direct as well. They have reasonable prices on a great variety of plants. They all arrived with healthy roots and transplanted fine. The plugs are small but if you want/need to buy a bunch of hostas it's a great way to go. They also had very good prices on my Wilcox All Pro long handled trowel which is hands down one of the best impulse garden buys I have made. Rather than replace broken or bent trowels every year, I spent a little more but have a tool that is as good as new 3.5 years in.

I've also ordered from Bluestone Perennials and I was happy with my plants. They all arrived healthy and safely packed. If you can catch them during a sale you can get some great deals.

The last thing I would say is to try and find a good local nursery. That can make a huge difference in developing your garden.

Plus 100 on the local nursery, especially if it includes natives, because you know they'll survive/thrive. And Bluestone Perennials typically has a half-price sale during May.

I also like Hallson Gardens out of Michigan. Chris always sends the largest roots (the Hardy Hibiscus that I have purchased from him have all gone straight into 5 gallon and 7 gallon pots - they are monsters!) and he specializes in Hostas. He also carries a nice assortment of perennials.

I emailed Chris at Hallson Gardens last summer asking if he possibly had "Turn of the Century". This is what I received in September or October last year:

It is currently in a 7 gallon pot. I looked up my invoice and he charged me $8.75 before discount. Gotta love it!!!

I should add that it has just broke dormancy.

I also ordered "Cranberry Crush" at the same time that is in a 5 gallon trade pot (also just broke dormancy):
Thumb of 2013-05-24/OldGardener/0078e6

He charged $12.75 for it before discount. They are a far cry from the 4" pots that so many other vendors offer for the same price!
In total, I think I have purchased 8 or so different Hibiscus from him as well as perennials.

I love the beautiful daylily that you have in your avatar! What is it?

My favorite place for daylilies is Valley of the Daylilies http://www.thevalleyofthedayli...

They're north of Cincinnati, OH in Lebanon and an hour each way for me.

Dan and Jackie Bachman are the owners and they're nice and friendly! I've known them since Summer 1999. Dan specializes in the spider and unusual forms in his introductions, but he grows other types also.

Dan even named one after me! 'Marilyn Grua' Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Marilyn Grua')
Welcome to the Agastache and Salvias Forum!

Hummingbirds are beautiful flying jewels in the garden!
