I've not noted such a foliage spiral; I'll try to remember to take a look. They've been over-shadowed and often get lost in the back of border as other plants were added to garden in front of them. I'd estimate they're in the 2' + height range. I do believe the garlic aroma is evident if stepped on.

I like them all jm but schubertiis double spheres and color is stunning. It's not that late but I'm visualizing a kids movie animator having a ball turning the longer flower stems into writhing tentacles with little mouths at the ends.

Polly, what a great idea to give Jenna her own row of flowers! That's how we make new gardeners!

Thanks Susan. I have just two grandchildren, and my grandson Jamie loves to cook with me. I'm so glad I found something they both love that we can do in common.

doglover,
the schubertii are supposed to be hardy to this area and from my experience are, but only to a limited extent. I usually plant them in the fall and have a fine presentation the following late spring...but that's it, they've never successfully overwintered to return a 2nd season for me. They attain probably at least twice the size of christophii. Atm full spread, they're at least basketball size. I've never had one reseed or self seed. If you'd like some seed, I check some out after work and let you know.

jmorth: Yes, I would love some seeds, especially if they are probably only going to be good for one season. I do not mind replanting. I might have to do some more invesigation to hardiness for my area which is suppose to be zone 5. I am Northern Illinois. Thank you for the response.
