Ooh, that I will definitely try. I LOVE larkspur, though I've yet to really get it going here. Have a few WS jugs to get out. Had a few smallish plants last year...

My Larkspur has just about outgrown it's jug. I should be planting them soon. I'm hoping we get some rain later this week so i can plant.

I haven't grown zinnias for a while, but Daniel.. DMgardener got me going again. Wintersown ones are starting in earnest. Why did I garden without them for so long?

I've been so behind this year, lots of annuals never got planted in the ground, so I've been spending the last couple of days potting them into anything that will hold dirt. I love Zinnias too, and thankfully only started short, bushy varieties this year that will work in containers.

I know what you mean. I'm still putting things out in the gardens. I think every single calendula Touch of Red Orange germinated. I'm out of school for the summer...no, not a student, lol!...and am still planting and planting. If I could only stop weeding, it would make things go much faster, ya know?!
I have a few shorter zinninas that Daniel sent, but these are tall and are playing well with the lilies, etc. I must take pics of the grouping even though a few of the earlier lilies are finished blooming.

I love calendula. They may be only orange & yellow, but bloom late & do reseed.

I'm still weeding to make room for annuals. They may never get there.

I did some hauling out yesterday and planted larkspur and Touch of Red calendula and some of the fringed dianthus seeds. They will be late, but they add a bit of color when the rest is dying back.

Don't give up, Lucy!

Jumper 2 is dealing with a really nasty long rooted grass.

Ooohh, is it Johnson Grass? That stuff is wicked! I've got a stand of it that I'm not sure can be killed.

I have perennial rye grass - persistant and very long jointed roots. Also orchard grass, white grass, timothy, blue grass - the joys of living on a grass based dairy.

We're clear of Johnson grass so far - the State of New York is very proactive about avoiding it. Not that it isn't up here, just not here here yet.

We have centipede grass...Hate it!! I've been using Roundup for poison ivy on it and have had some success. I don't like using chemicals...and won't in the back where my dogs are, but this is war!

Ooooh.........so glad I caught up to you all again.

Wanted say I also got zinnia seed from Daniel, WS'd them and they are gorgeous!! Except for the recent onslaught of the first Japanese Beetles............... Those WS'd zinnias are the hardiest I have every had.

Also WS'd larkspur, cosmos, and lemon gem marigolds which are becoming some of my fav annuals. The lemon gems are actually beautifully mounded and have a lemony, rather than regular, marigold scent. Last year I put in some tangerine gems but they were not nearly as sturdy. I would totally recommend the lemon gem as very very hardy and easy to WS in this zone.

Also all my nasturtiums, various colors are just gorgeous. I am most impressed with the cosmos (a double dark pink). The plants almost look like little trees-their stems are so large and sturdy. Though I was a total sceptic back in Feb., I now compare the hardiness of my WS plants with greenhouse starts and they win, hands down. Living on a lakefront, the wind that comes in is very intense and none of WS annuals have broken (knock on wood, yet................. Hilarious! )

WIll post pics as soon as I can get my digital card to download---technology issues............. Confused and, maybe age?? Hilarious!

I'd love to try those Lemon Gem marigolds. I've tried swapped seed several times and never gotten any to germinate- is there a trick to them?

I think mostly it's a problem of giving the seed a cold period, which the larger seed houses do before they package. In the US, anyway. We have lost the knowledge of how to treat seeds in the US because of this - open package stick in ground, grow. Anyway, this is probably why winter sowing has become so popular - everything old is new again.

I've tried wintersowing them a few times, and tried once to start them indoors, but not one sprouted. The seeds came from a DGr who saves her seed and starts them each year; she's great with seeds, so I wouldn't think the source would be the problem.
