Hi @carolm
Love your vibrant pictures!
We are in the dormant season here in Michigan, so to enjoy your beautiful garden pictures is a real treat - especially the lilies. Do you grow trumpet lilies?

thanks Kate; when it's in the midst of summer here I relish seeing snow scenes from the other side!

No trumpet-lilies happening here ----your's seem quite similar to the November lily I grow though.

Hey, anyone growing the Perennial: Prairie Yucca? It was sold to me under that name, but I am pretty certain it is Yucca "Filmentosa". How could such a beautiful flower, have such a horrible name. As in "Yuk". LOL. Nevertheless, after at least five years of ownership, one of the two plants sent up a single, very tall bract, and last year, it followed with two stunning bracts, at least 5' tall. AND, the other one which has never bloomed, has really built up its foliage in the past year, so I have high expectations for a bloom on same this year.

Mine are pass along yucca that were passed along to my mom that were passed along to me so I have no idea what their actual name is. They are just solid green with blooms like yours The ones in front of my house in mostly full sun bloom every year. The ones in back under mostly shade, not so much. I will probably do some division on the ones in the back at some point later this year.

A family friend who has a place at the beach in NC plants yucca to anchor the sand dunes (they send roots down to China, or nearly). I don't know the variety, but it's always fun to see those tall blooms! Since they help keep his boardwalk (and house, even) in place, I'm sure they are on his top 10 list.

Little voice in the back of my head seems to think there's a very specific moth pollinator for yuccas. Yep, googled & found a nice (and short) article about "The Yucca and its Moth" https://prairieecologist.com/2...

Have you had success with self-sowing annuals of the cottage garden style? I got moderate success with then last year in initial growth and am wondering what I might expect this year.

I'm trying calendula, cleomes, some cosmos, 4 o' clocks, balsams and a few perennials.

Cleomes, balsam, and 4 o'clocks self seeded like crazy for me. Verbena bonariensis, rudbeckia, and larkspur are others, which I've been trying to get rid of for years. Just let the plants remain and let them seed naturally.

Calendulas self seed very well here, but I never had any luck sowing cosmos or Verbena bonariensis and I have tried sowing them in pots as well as directly in the ground. Shrug!
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!

Yes, I have successfully seeded Calif. poppy, cosmos, zinnia, marigolds, calendula, cleome, petunia, Mexican sunflower, lupine-and when possible I save my own seeds from year to year.

Autumn is in the air here. We dropped from mid-90's to mid-sixties. Ahhh. Looking back I'd say we had good growing season this summer

I have only the tall version, but keep meaning to try the short version, I think it's called Lollipop - has anyone got it and if yes, how does it perform?
