ZZs are such cool plants - and so easy to grow! Tarev, leaf cuttings seem to root more easily if you take the leaf and cut in half. Stick the cut ends of each half into the soil. Keep only slightly moist and sometime in, oh, maybe about 6 to 8 decades it will root and grow a whole new plant! Ok, maybe it's only 6 to 8 weeks(ish), but it FEELS like decades while you're waiting!! Thumbs up

I bought one today myself and just repotted it. Its roots were well reaching beyond the pot, so it required some careful cutting of the original plastic pot to free it. I'm hoping it will do well with my lower light conditions; so long as I don't overwater that is. D'Oh!

It is nice to see someone successfully separated theirs and see its progress over time. I'm interesting in seeing what they look like today (tarev's).

I've had one growing perfectly happy and healthy in my office for about 2 years now. It only gets typical artificial office lighting and virtually -0- natural light. It's a slow but steady grower. I only water it once every 2-3 weeks. I purposely keep it on the dry side just to ensure I don't overwater it and cause it to rot.

It even has a leaf baby growing in it. I accidentally broke a leaf off of it while rotating it one time. (I rotate the plant 1/4 turn every other day.) I snipped off the petiole end of the leaf (actually almost to about the halfway point), and just stuck it in the soil. It hasn't sent up any growth yet, but I do know that it is well rooted and has formed a little bulblet at this point. I have about in inch of pure sand on the top of the soil to help with fungus gnats, and the leaf is rooted entirely in the sand.

Hello Hamwild and Carter! Smiling

Here are my ZZ's right now: it is much more indoors, used to be near our north facing window. It is now about 15ft away from my west facing window. Any natural light it gets comes in by late afternoon.

Carter, I was not successful rooting leaves, so I just wait for the plant to make new leaf stalks and it always makes some new ones anyways so all is well. Really love this plant, so low maintenance. This is one of my plants that I do not worry at all even if we get on an extended trip, it manages quite well.

@tarev,
Excuse my... senior moments... but, I meant to ask you what potting mix you use for your ZZs? I resorted to using what I have access to, which is MG Palm & Cactus, MG perlite, and orchid bark. I couldn't tell from your pictures (I can see perlite, but that's about it for my eyes lol).

I used super soil palm and cactus mix and added in some perlite, pumice, akadama, kanuma, some leftover clay rocks.

I just have those big rocks at the base of the plant it help me see if media is still wet. If I lift that rock and soil below still looks damp I delay my watering.

I thought I had killed my ZZ plant about a year ago, all the leaves turned yellow and fell off. I couldn't bring myself to just toss it so I stuck it behind another pot on a terrace with more light and an open roof so it rains on it. Then I ignored it. About 4 months later I could see it was coming to life. I haven't watered it once until yesterday and now I'm worried that I might have jinxed it. It's been hot and dry with no rain for a week or more though and I was watering the pot next to it so I gave it some water too. It looked really dry. It's looking gorgeous now though, ignoring it and giving it more light and less water seems to have been the answer.

Hi Jonna, yeah, it seems to undergo that leaf dropping mode at times, but got to restrain oneself from watering too much. Then it perks up once more.

But your area has better and warmer temps, maybe in your area it wants a bit more water than mine here?

Glad to hear it is doing better again! Thumbs up

It's beautiful, Jonna! I had a large one I bought and killed by overwatering. I'll have to try again. They are nice plants!

Mine is also exploding. I think I counted six new growths, not including the two that are unfurled/unfurling. I can see roots through the bottom of the pot and it's beginning to warp my plastic pot. It's nice to have good luck with one after so many failures on my part in the past.

Almost all of the new growths are in their "peeking out of the soil" stage, so you can't see most of them currently, but here is mine. Despite the plastic pot, when it's wet, it has some weight to it!

I guess one of the first things I need to do come Spring is repot my ZZ Plant! I counted 8 new growths, three of which have unfurled, one is unfurling, and four are still emerging from the soil (the "lipstick" growths). But, my plastic pot is warping and I am having to water it about every 4 days! It's quick to let me know it wants a drink, as one of the exposed bulbs wrinkles when it gets too dry. Blinking
