I still can't believe that I saw one of them! Seeing two of them together was more than I ever expected. Actually, I was beginning to think it was an urban legend (or rural legend?), and people were confusing coyotes with the wolves. Well, there is no confusing them after seeing them. I just wish that they weren't so far off, but I also didn't want them any closer. They were about 500 yards away when I tried taking pictures, which turned out blurry. They got as close as about 300 yards, but ran into the trees, so I couldn't get a picture then either. I picked up some film when we ran into the town, and I'll use my regular camera with the good zoom lens, if I'm lucky enough to see them again.

That's really fascinating, Natalie! I had no idea there were wild wolves so close! Although, we think there may also be one in our area, but just assumed it was one someone had turned loose. Hope you can get some photos. Can you still get film developed? I thought that was a thing of the past!

What I have always heard, from people who would know, is that wolves won't attack humans. When my DH was growing up in OK, he said there was a wolf that would sit and watch while they were working in the fields. But I'd be nervous, too! And both coyotes and wolves WILL go after dogs.

woofie, we knew that there was one when we moved here. Several people mentioned it, but it was a couple of miles down the road, and there had been no recent sightings. Last week our neighbor said one ran in front of her when she was driving, about a mile in the opposite direction. She had talked to some people in that area, and they saw a pack killing one of their lambs, right near where the Penstemon is growing. That made us nervous. We aren't worried about them attacking us, but like you said, they will attack dogs. Coyotes are everywhere here too, and we see them all the time, pretty close to the house. Those make me nervous too, but the wolves are different. My Mom's brother lived in Alaska most of his life, and he had dogs that got into it with wolves on more than one occasion. He ended up with a hybrid litter once as well.

Yep, you can still buy film! Hurray! Hurray!

Here is the picture, which is lousy at best. The deer is to the left of center, and the wolf is all the way over on the right side, just below the green clump of bushes in the middle of the brown area. I cropped out the wolf, but it's really blurry.

Yep, that's blurry alright! Hilarious! Looks like he (or she) is very dark. The father of our wolf (now sadly departed) was dark; they said he was a MacKenzie wolf. That may well be what you have locally; they're Canadian and said to be one of the largest wolves.

This one was very large. Huge even. The other one was smaller, so we're thinking that this was the male and the other was his wife. Supposedly they are grey wolves. This one was kind of brownish in color. I'm trying to find a binocular attachment for my digital camera, but no one seems to have one for the binocular/camera combo that I have.

MacKenzie is a subspecies of gray wolf. There's an interesting entry in Wiki on them:

My Dad's wife knows all about the wolves in this area, so I'll have to ask her about it. There is a wolf research center not too far from here that I'll take her to when she comes to visit. I'm clueless!

Thanks. I'm on a quest to find plants with the name Aurora in them for a small memorial garden for her. Heh, I'll settle for "Briar Rose," too since she was really named for the Princess Aurora and NOT the Aurora Borealis.

Did you check the database? I think you can put in the name Aurora, and whatever is in there with that name will show up. Beautiful name for a beautiful animal.

I tugged on one piece and got quite a bit of root with it, so I've got high hopes for that one! That one and the cuttings are potted up, with rooting hormone on the cuttings. I'll still go back and get some seed when it's ready, but I'm hoping that I get a few of the cuttings to grow. Like you said, it doesn't hurt to try!

We saw the most beautiful little fawn on the way home, so it was worth it just for that. It was standing in the middle of the road, and then it was prancing away from us, not knowing what to do. It would turn around and look, about every 10 feet, and then prance some more. It was still pretty wobbly, and so tiny! I bet it wasn't over a week old. Mama deer was in a field, and was so nervous, so we just stopped and watched until it was safe. The baby finally went down the hill, and mama ran over. She looked relieved that her baby was safe and by her side. It warmed my heart to see that! Lovey dubby
