Which potting soil are you using for the semp seeds? I still have to get some. Have to get some chicken grit also.
I can't believe I had so much trouble knowing what what was seed. This year it was very obvious to me. I have many bags of seed this time. Well, for me it is many bags. Green Grin!

Going to play at Cynda's place tomorrow. Want to come?

I was inspired by Lynn's post to go out and see if I could gather some seed from my bloom stalks. That is NOT going to happen, look what I found instead.

Oh, I have been here I have just been lurking a lot. I did not know that after the semps bloomed that there would be so many babies where the blooms were. I expected to find only dried flowers and was quite surprised to find all the new chicks!

Wow, all three bloom stalks did it. One has more babies than the others but they all did the same thing. How weird is that? Do you think is is something that Red Heart tends to do or just some strange fluke?

I have had a few do that, of different cultivars. I think it is just some kind of fluke. Seems all kinds of weird things have been happening with the semps this year.
Did you try to gather any seeds yet?

No, not yet. I will check on that tomorrow. It was getting pretty close to dark when I was taking these pics and had to get dinner fixed and so forth. Now I just have to know if there are seeds in any of the pods or if they just made babies.

Hold a bag under the seed pods, the seed dislodge very easy when they are dry.

Lori;

there is a golden rule on sempervivum - everything might be...nothing has to be Big Grin

I've seen this bloomers a several times but not often; you have to cutt the babies from the stalk because the stalk will wilt and the babies are far away from soil (not so good during the winter);

there might be seeds also - try to seperate the seed pods;

Peter

Thanks Peter! I didn't get out to see about seed today, the wind was blowing 35 mph here with gusts of who knows what so I decided to wait for a better day. I didn't think about the babies not having any soil, I will have to take care of that this weekend. Now I have to figure out where to put them, there are a bunch of little ones to care for!

You will find them all a new space/home. Try using a paper lunch bag to capture the seeds. First carefully cut off all the offsets. Then place the paper bag over the remaining stalk with seed heads. Cut the stalk and quickly turn the bag upright, with the captured stalk/seeds. Hurray!

webesemps said:Here's a noid that was beginning to send up bloom stalk. I cut the bloom stalk off and have been waiting to see if head will send out more blooms or any offsets. It is the only one of its kind in my NOID collection. Note group of growth at where I cut bloom stalk but also growth below top set of leaves. Hoping for some offsets that are more distinctive when I get back in 2 weeks? Rolling my eyes.

Nov. 25th - here's an update on the Noid that I cut off its blooming stem. Note the bigger offsets; WooHoo!
