Around here I am starting slowly to move my plants back inside! Got started by getting those succulents inside which might slowly object staying soaked, and making room on the deck to get things moved up from the cage. What can I say, it is a project! Smiling

Now this Myrmecophila tibicinis started blooming months ago in the cage and has now finally opened the last three buds. Amazing!

I think the this year smallish Habenaria is not rhodocheila, but rather Habenaria erichmichelii. (seems to be subspecies of rhodocheila) The blooms on my plant are scented, the regular rhodocheila is not supposed to have a scent.

Ooo, a scented Habenaria, how wonderful. I seem to have lost mine - literally! Had them in a pot when we hid all the plants last year for Hurricane Ian and I don't remember where it ended up. Hoping to see a few little pink flowers popping up somewhere to tell me it's still alive . . .

Lucy, nice Phal!!

"A curiosity question: Does anyone know the species name for grocery store Phals?"

I wouldn't ever expect to find a Phal species in the Supermarket, but I could imagine a person well versed in the art of identifying Orchid species, to recognize certain character traits. Perhaps one might see Phal equestris in a miniature Phal as example.
If the Phal happens to come with a tag of a registered Grex, one can look at the parentage and see the species involved.
For the fun of it - here is a list of of registered Phals; although the site may look like gibberish, there is a lot of information to be had by clicking on a name.

Take the 7. link down on the left side and look at the parentage of those Phals

That website is in Japanese! Hilarious!

I'm thinking a lot of my Phals have a species name. For instance, P. hieroglyphica or P. tetraspis. The plain regular moth orchids we all buy in the grocery store have cultivar names but no species. For instance, Phalaenopsis 'Honey Bee'. There must be a species all those Phals belong to.

Lucy, you didn't buy "Supermarket Phals", you bought nicely identified species.
The plants from the Supermarket are mass produced and they are usually cloned/overcloned hybrids. Looking at the Japanese link, surely many of those old hybrids are probably nowadays the basis for all those hybrids! I don't think they "saw" a species lately.

Probably have to trace a long ways back up their "family tree" to get to any of the species originally used in their breeding.

Ok, I thought all plants had a genus and a species. Maybe Phalaenopsis BigBoxis 'HoneyBee'.

Phalaenopsis - Genus
BigBoxis - Hybrid/Grex
'HoneyBee' - 'Clonal' name/Cultivar

Hilarious! Rolling my eyes. Yeah, I like "BigBoxis". So, you have a couple of Phals that do have genus and species, P. hieroglyphica and P. tetraspis. These haven't been crossed with anybody else to change their characteristics. Once a species is crossed with another different species, their offspring are never again a species, they are always hybrids.

The mass-produced plants sold in the box stores and grocery stores are many, many crosses down the road from the original (probably many) species that were crossed decades ago to make all the amazing colors, sizes and shapes we see today.

And BigBill is adding to this -
"When explaining the relationships between species and hybrids, I sometimes use this analogy :
Think of species orchids like the ingredients we use when we bake. Sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda, flour, raisins, chocolate chips, yeast, eggs, vanilla, milk, etc. etc.
How much we use of each ingredient allows us to bake or make cookies, breads, tarts, rolls, cakes, Pies, turnovers, muffins, etc.
All Phalaenopsis hybrids are made up of different species. How many and which ones determine what is produced. Some are used to produce compact hybrids, some to produce larger flowers, some to increase branching, some to add stripes, etc. etc.

The greater the complexity of the hybrid, ( the more ingredients ) the harder it becomes to predict exactly what will be produced.
Go back to bakery goods. If you throw in too many ingredients, the chances are that it won't taste very good. Just as some Phalies don't look so good either!! 🤪"

There you have it! Smiling
