Interesting bloom - I agree with Laurie, it looks mysterious!
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

I don't know anything about Oncocyclus hybrids--I'll have to learn a little about them--see if they are easy to grow.

They are quite unstable in culture, I grow them under film (as protection from precipitation) almost all year round and still sometimes there are losses

a more stable option is arilbreds (hybrids of arils with ordinary bearded irises). There is a large selection of arilbreds in the USA

That is a beautiful aril, Sergey! Thumbs up

We don't have access to many arilbreds here, although Smokin Heights Iris is slowly making more available. I don't think any arils are in commerce here - one would have to get seeds from a seed exchange or one of the gardening hobby groups in order to grow them.

Thank You!
There is already a good enough selection of arilbreds in Smokin Heights to start hybridization) In addition, they have arylbreds of their own selection, in my opinion... I also know that Pat Toolan grows pure arils in Australia, are you familiar with her?

Yes, Smokin Heights is working on their own arilbreds too.

Unfortunately I am not familar with Pat Toolan - I'll have to ask around.

Yay for your blooms, Daphne! Does 'Blind Ambition' grow well for you? I've been thinking about getting it. I thought it was yellow with a blue beard, but in your photo the yellow has a very greenish tinge.

@andread sorry andrea, i misidentified it, and corrected my mistake. it's really 'marsh mist' an ib. my 'blind ambition' is in a pot and has only bloomed once, very short.

Your season is underway! So nice to see pics of irises as I wait to go out into the 24 degree morning to feed my horses. Hilarious! I worry about this yo yo weather we're having here, hope it doesn't cause rot to begin. Glad to see spring happening somewhere. Smiling

That's rough, Tom. The days of having a homesteading farm are mostly behind me, but I don't miss those 20 degree trudging out in the cold days for sure.

Great blooms, Daphne. I really love Autumn Explosion.

Off-topic, but if you aren't homesteading anymore, Monty, are you raising chickens or growing veggies, or is it all just ornamental gardens? Just curious.

The yellow seedling is still in bloom. Hurray! It sure brightens up the garden on these overcast days (rain again here).

No other bearded irises blooming yet in the Near 40 (well, visible from the house), though there are stalks coming up, and of course there are PCIs in bloom. I haven't been out to the side yard or Back 40, but I'd expect the I. japonica x NADA to be in bloom, and maybe also YONKERS.

I would love to see some photos of your PCIs, Marylin. I am trying to grow some here near Redding. I will put up 90% shade cloth for them in the next few weeks. I still have my doubts about them surviving valley heat.
