Thanks, all. Just one of possibly 5. Not sure of the numbers which are based on the reports of a neighbor.
Thanks to all for their suggestions. One thing I did not mention in the last post was that I moved the position of the trap so that it was under some lilac bushes. This might have made him comfortable enough to enter the cage. But seriously, the damage to the cage was unexpected and a little bit intimidating. The previous occupant did nothing to the cage but the GH did real damage. (And not pretty to see up close either)
He's already gone. I'm thinking of future visitors. There is no animal control here except the police and they won't do anything unless the animal is dangerous by demonstrated behavior.
I don't wish harm to any living creature, but there comes a time when common sense rules. This creature had no desire to share, he/she wanted it all. Time to go, how ever that happens.
One GH gone, hopefully the rest of them soon.
Thought you might be interested in an update. Baited the trap several times over the past two weeks, but mostly left it open, unset and unbaited. Today found the trap occupied by a young opossum which was dead. He must have died of a heart attack or something. Funny thing is, the trap was unbaited and sitting on concrete paving stones (I learned from the raccoon and ghoundhog that leaving the trap on grass means no grass left under the trap if you catch something). Opossums must be pretty dumb.
Years ago, back when we still had a dog, one day she went nuts by my open bag of potting soil in the garage. I looked in and there was a "dead" baby possum. I took the bag outside and poured the possum out on the driveway. It played dead for about another hour and when it thought nobody was looking, it got up and ran up a tree. Later that evening it came down and ran in the road and got run over. No doubt that it was dead after that.
