Name: Ed Burton East Central Wisconsin (Zone 5a) Hybridizing, Lily Auction seed sell
The two seedlings pictured below are pod sibs
They average 5.5 to 6 inch blooms, 3/4 way branching, bud count mid to high teens, pollen easy, pod with effort.
acts as a dormant here, NE WI
These are 2 year old seedlings: Gus Townsend X Interview With a Vampire sibs
This is a cross of Last Snowflake & a Westbourne. This seedling is less than 1 year old. I bought a batch of seedlings from Mary Jane (Bubbles) I do not know the exact parentage on the seedlings. I expect it to improve, but am not sure how much it will improve over the next couple of years. I am happy to see a couple of blooms though.
I received Michele's permission to post pictures of these seedlings that I got from her last year through the Lily Auction, and I think they're so beautiful that I wanted to share pictures with everyone. They were actually hybridized by James Hall.
WARRIOR VICTORIOUS X ELECTRIC RED
SINGULAR SENSATION X CERISE MASTERPIECE
SUNDAY RIVER X KISS MY GRITS
I took this picture of the last pink daylily later when the temps had jumped to the 100's, so the bloom is quite a bit more pastel than it was in the first blooms. The second picture gives a better idea of the color of most of the blooms. HOWEVER, as you can see in the second picture, I also got a great little treat along with that daylily, this beautiful yellow. Michele thinks it's probably from the same cross and just hadn't bloomed yet when she sent the plant last Sept. What a lovely surprise!
LONESOME HEART X JAY FARQUHAR
Needless to say, I love each and every one of these seedlings!
Yes the yellow "surprise" daylily was most likely the same cross as the other and was probably growing next to it and part of it grew into the one I dug. I really like it and think it's very pretty.
Here's one of Kim's that she did with an off the wall cross. I only think one other bloomed out of it and we have discarded the rest since we are making room for the new seedlings. I kept this one because it had a scape and I could tell the bloom would be small; I wanted to see what it was going to look like.
Frank's Black Eyed Susan x Lillian's Funky Spunky there should be more coloring on the sepals on later blooms. The bloom on the right is CHERRY SWIZZLER to show size
Pretty seedlings Betty. I like the way Kim's mind works, a lot like mine.
Here is something all you hybridizers can look
forward to. If you work at it long enough it will
eventually pay off. I had heard of these one bud
wonders but had never seen one, I now have my own
If you don't look at it every day you may miss it bloom.
This is really the kind of scape we look for
a two year old with two scapes that look like this.
EMMA'S CURLS X SKINWALKER
Not real crazy about the bloom color or form on the first bloom. 8"
As you veterans have told me - be patient with those "babies" many will improve with time. My problem is how much time? And then there are those that no extra amount of time will help - those are easy decisions.
Now I have to decide if I will keep any 2 year olds that don't bloom this year, and give them one more year - or compost them...... to make room for more....
Great examples, Fred, and hopefully someday maybe they'll sink in!
Cindy, I always love your seedlings, and I guess they're pretty much dips. Your use of STARGATE PORTAL and STARMAN'S QUEST really has paid off! Beautiful!
Name: Margaret Near Kamloops, BC, Canada (Zone 3a)
Two seedlings from yesterday.
First one is from seed that I got from Sandy, (seedsower) this is it's second bloom, first one was a real mess. I think this is going to be a very nice daylily, it did lose the marking by late in the day.
Infinite Blue X Ornate Hawk Eagle
Second is my seedling, FFE, a poly, I really like the deep rich color on this seedling.
Thanks Betty I do mainly dips. I do tets too but sell off most of the tet seeds. As you can see, I do plant a few tet seeds and sometimes I keep them if I like them. I really like the Maxfield Parrish seedling that I posted above.
