Johan's Improved Uprights sold as open field stock ( no choice of color )through B&D during 2013/2014. I purchased 6 just for fun. They are from the original Don Egger 'Silver Upright Project' when he was chief hybridizer for Cebeco, USA. They were known to get 6 to 8 feet tall. Well, they got 6 to 7 feet tall in 2015, loaded with flowers and not one needed staking! I'm not a fan of uprights, especially this tall, but the colors are vibrant and beautiful.

The topic of Guntis Grant and his hybrid material came up the other day in another thread. I can't remember if we posted a link to his website or not. Anyway here it is. It's not in English, but it's educational non the less. So, the next time you see his name in the NALS seed listing, you'll at least have a mental picture of where and who the seed came from. His Fall 2015 sales catalog made up nearly exclusively of his hybrids can be seen here Smiling . http://www.daugmaleslilijas.lv...

I came across this 20 minute tour of Arcata Flower Farms with Lane DeFries I thought was interesting. It's more or less in three sections, Lilies, tulips and iris, so there's a little something interesting for everybody. Lilies come first. The part I was interested in is that he stores all his lily bulbs frozen solid for up to 12 months. Asiatics are the coldest at -2.0C or 28.4F, Orientals are the are the warmest at -1.5C or 29.3F and LA's in the middle at 1'7C or 28.9F. You can view this part between the 4:30 to 6:30 minute marks. While I thought the entire video was interesting, I was somehow constantly reminded that it was George Heublein's dream to convert the Old Oregon Bulb Farm into this. And how either ironic or coincidental or how fate would play it out, Heublein's young, hand picked farm boy named Lane DeFries to develop the transition project, would eventually fulfill his dream.

I live in Arcata, Calif., and the "sun Valley Florial" is located here. It has many operations in many areas but I think this is their main headquarters. Normally in late July - August they have an open house. The last 2 years they haven't. I have taken this tour several times. After they cut the lilies the bulbs are ground up and they get a new shipment every 3 - 4 months from holland. I took lots of photos during the tour. They also sale bulbs during this open house.

Nice pics. Can someone explain to me what a tree lily is? Is it a type or one above so many feet tall? LMK Thanks

The lily tree was a name adopted by Brecks originally, years ago. It was a marketing tool to sell orienpet/ OT lilies. It was meant to market their strength of stem and vigor, not height really. Orienpet/ OT lilies are a cross between an oriental lily and a trumpet Lily.

African Queen is a trumpet lily, so it would not fall into that category. African Queen is usually a lily that is not too expensive to replace. Sometimes those things happen. I look at it as making room for another 😊

Signs of Autumn: Baby Trumpet lilies from seed planted during the Spring of 2014.
Thumb of 2015-10-22/Roosterlorn/f548d6

All the seeds were from the same pod and the cross pretty well controlled. If you look closely, you'll notice several young green babies that just came up this past summer. Almost like two separate families of offspring coming along here. I wonder if each group will bear a strong resemblance to it's own parents side of the family.
