So far 4 chicks. Not sure how long I should let the hens continue to set? The other hens are curious but have not bothered the chicks. I went with unmedicated starter because the hens are snacking on it as well. Per the feed store I am giving plenty of oyster shell. So glad we ditched the rooster, I think he may have been a problem.

Good, since you have two hens setting, I'd take one hen away with the chicks after about 2 or 3 days, and leave the other hen to finish up the hatching process. The will leave the nest when they think they have to.

Update: both hens are tending the chicks together, spending most of the time out in the chicken yard, teaching them how to forage. The chicks respond well to either mom, they kind of run a tag-team warning off the other curious hens, and they huddle up side by side at night with the chicks tucked under them. Seems to be working well. The chicks are a week old and starting to feather out.

I could not leave this go without sharing. My daily visitors. Neighbor's hen and chicks that I swore would be dead by now...8 out of 10 have survived. They are now just about Hawk bait. This concerns me but they are learning to run and fly and hide. We can only hope she taught them well.

It's a nice, high-resolution photo, too. I zoomed way in and they still looked good.

Rick, are you talking about my chicken and peeps photo? I took that with my phone and I am the world's worst photographer.
I usually screw up most everything I take because I also move at the wrong time. If you are not talking about mine, forgive me for butting in.

Deb, how many chicks did you end up with?
JB, they are really cute, they look to be some game type of chicken?

Yes, she is a game hen. The rooster, a beautiful game cock until the fox got him, was also black and I see some redish and white on those chicks. He was bluish black when the sun hit him. Just gorgeous. He put up quite a fight according to the feathers he left behind. I was so sad and it was not my bird. I am an old softy.

Tom, I ended up with 4 chicks and both moms continue to share brood-duty. The other 4 hens have accepted the little guys and only peck at them now and again, mostly as a warning when I throw out scratch. So far, can't tell whether the babies are male or female. Hoping for all pullets, but that is fairly unlikely.

I've put out chick starter in a low feeder and continue to feed the hens layer feed in their big-girl feeder, but who knows who is eating what. The little guys seem to spend most of their day outside foraging. I toss most of my weeds into the chicken yard and am finding some are setting seed and growing into volunteers that the chickens apparently won't eat, which is a bit nicer look that pitted dirt. Here's what they are leaving alone - feverfew, lemon balm, calendula, ladies mantle, vervain, blue vervain, I think mother's wort or something similar. They also won't eat nettles unless I cut them down, which I do. And, I've planted comfrey outside their yard which they snack on through the wire. I will do some research to be sure none of the stuff they are leaving alone is particularly toxic to them, although not a problem at this juncture since they are leaving it alone. That may change in the winter though.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

One of my Buff Laced Polish hens showed up today with one chick! I had found one of her other nests and took the eggs away, but she must have hid another one somewhere. It's pretty late to have a baby chick running around, so I put them in a cage and will have to keep them in the barn where it's warmer.

What a fun surprise - post a pic when you can. Here's recent snaps of my 4 teenager-chicks. Any guesses on sex? They are almost 3 months old now. The rooster was a Welsummer.
