Main thing for me will be a reader. Music would also be nice - I've never had any portable music device whatsoever, although I did load all my CDs onto my computer but then they just sit there as I usually listen to Pandora while computing. My sister got some cool Boze thing that her i-something plugs into which has great sound. Sounds like the GalaxyNote3 you reference would be about the right size for my use.

Search the app store for a qr reader and you'll find several free options. I'd like to know the results you see!

I downloaded Qrafter app and scanned a database entry with my IPad and it brought up the info to open the URL to the entry. Cool! Thumbs up

Very cool addition. I can scan, get a plant on my phone for later reference, like when I happen to be shopping at garden centers.

Deb, there are cheap smart phones. I have a $59 Virgin Mobile Android one. No contract.

An iPad or Kindle makes a nicer reader than a tiny phone, but the phone works OK. iPads can get 4G service, I'm not sure about other tablets. If you're traveling in a trailer, simple wifi might not suffice.

Agree. I think I will go for The Note. It would be about paperback size vs most E-Readers which tend to be Trade Paperback sizes. Tablets are almost as large as a laptop, or ate least bigger than Trade Paperback-size. I had the Sony E-Reader. I liked that it was paperback size. I like reading from my GalaxyS3 phone, tho it is smaller than a paperback page but not by much.

Cheryl, you must be a yungin then as my eyes just have a terribe time with those small contraptions! Hilarious! when my son bought me a Galaxy MP I asked for the 5". He asked me if I was sure? I told him, I'm getting old, so, yes! And it's worse when you're outside. The reflections just add to the problem.

My two 'musts' are to be able to read at night in bed without bothering my husband and to be able to read outside. ??

They probably make some sort of awning type thingy for reading outside. I mean, if you're not in bright light it may be fine. But even the reflection of yourself, clothes, sky, make it harder to read. Any of them should be fine for reading in bed at night.

The Kindle can be read outside. You have choices of the type of print you have like black on white or white on black etc. Dh has the Kindle Fire and loves it. It picks up WiFi and you can use it like a laptop with limitations. DH watches his Netflix shows on it with ease. He was in the hospital for 3 months and used his Kindle more than his laptop. He said it was just "easier". I am no youngin' though young compared to some, I guess and old compared to others. I am passed middle age. My Galaxy s3's screen is about 4-1/2". Yet I still find myself enlarging thing all the time. It has a lot bigger screen the the IPhone. I have good strong reading lenses for both near and mid distance and a great eye doctor! Hurray!

I'm not familiar with Kindle. I wonder now if iPad has the same kind of settings? I don't use it for reading books because I have reading them electronically. But I use my iPad all the time, same thing, easier than the laptop.

Arlene, do you mean the same kind of settings for different background colors? Yes, both the Kindle Fire and iPad have them- backgrounds white, sepia. or white print on black background. I'm not sure if that's determined by the reader manufacturer or book publisher. My guess is the publisher.
