chelle, that is interesting information about what the lack of water does for the cucumbers (nothing good!). I didn't know this as I water my cucumber vines a lot. Every day in the hot weather, every other day in this cooler type weather we are having now. I will water the next day on a hot day even if we had rain the day before. Only my cucumbers. So they really never lack water.

The two melon pictured are the last from the vines in the pot. Those vines were just about dead, I was waiting on the melons to slip. So today they did and I pulled out all the potted melon vines.

The ones in ground are still growing well. I have some melons coming on them.

Moved some pots of squash from a grassy area over onto the driveway with the rest of the squash pots. Don't know why I put them there on the grass anyway. Had been there for a long time, killed all the grass were the pots were setting so I scratched up the soil, put out grass seed and watered.

I guess my cantaloupes were ready...I went out to check them this morning and they were all hollowed-out. Grumbling
Must have been delicious... Crying

These critters are driving me nuts!!!!! I'd need to grow my whole veggie garden in a huge cage! It's past the point of being ridiculous now...

chelle, were they on the ground? Do you use the slip test to get them before they drop? One reason I love to trellis keeps them away from critters. Then I can just put my hand under each fruit I think might be ready and when I touch it drops into my hand.

I would rethink the veggie garden and enclose a large area. Enough for all your veggies. And you had better go underground too so the bunnies can't dig.

No wonder you are frustrated. I would be steaming mad! Grumbling

Flowers and baby cukes on my second crop planted cukes.

Cucumbers. Straight Eight, Green Fingers and then Suyo Long. Green Fingers makes a very nice looking cucumber. Suyo Long, not so pretty but nice and tasty.

Then I also picked Juliet Grape tomatoes and Sweet Million cherry tomatoes.

Can you believe that this coming weekend is Labor Day Weekend already!? Too soon for me. Were does the summer go? It flys by much too quickly while winter drags on and on!

No, I can't. Except for the fact that it's blazing hot again...it's always hot this week!

And yes, I agree !

I am out there watering the cucumbers and can't believe how ratty and bad that long row of cukes looks. Today they are noticeably worse than they were yesterday and the day before. At this rate they will be coming out by the end of August! Sad Last year they lasted about two weeks longer.

Those Burpless on the short section trellis still do look pretty good so we will see.

So I also see smaller melons set in that in ground melon section. I look carefully and they sure don't look like cantaloupes. So maybe that means the Sweet Sakura melons have finally set. There were a few vines planted between the cantaloupes but all summer I saw no fruit set other than cantaloupe so figured maybe those vines died out or something.

Rita, I hope the warm weather hods out for ou to get some of those melons!

I was checking my logs and it seems that last year I was actually still planting in Oct so I feel a little better about still not having stuff planted. I seem to remember two years ago planting the first of Sept. and with a little cover, got some things to mature. My biggest problem that year were the chickens running free! They dug up all my beets and carrots!

I never got carrots planted and the turnips probably will not amount to anything. Beets should produce some. We will see if the melons make it.

But I was debaiting if I should plant Sweet Sakura next year or not so at least seeing melons makes me think I should try again next year. At least they set some. My Avara melons again have set not fruit. Same problem I had with them last year. Last year they grew vines but no fruit. Geeez, I will be trying AGAIN with the Avara next year and third time better be the charm. I want to taste Avara melons! Grumbling

Rita, I hope you have luck with it. I have been trying for two years to get it to maturity and not happening. Well, did get a couple melons but nothing worth writing home about. But remember, we've had a ton of rain. It's supposed to be a really good melon!

Rita:
>> but I just could not believe slugs got 5 feet up onto the very top of the plants.

I've seen them halfway up a lily that was 5 feet tall.

But that's better than finding them right in the middle of a Bok Choy I'm cleaning at sink.

And finding one in a head of Bok Choy is eetter than NOT finding it!

P.S. These "mangiatutto" peas just emerged.
(I think I sowed them two weeks ago. I know it was a weekend.)
Super Sugar Snap and
'Chinese' Snow Peas (Territorial PE627)

And I sowed some 'Carouby de Maussane' Snow Pea/Snap Pea yesterday (August 25).
I love the Italian name for this variety that was developed in France:
Pisello Rampicante Gigante Svizzero

(Swiss giant pea climber)

Lovely language!
"Rampicante" instead of "vine" or "pole".
"Mangiatutto" wants to be sung operatically, with extravagant gestures.
"Mange toute" (French for "eat it all") sounds like a dog disease.

Arlene, I put it in my cart but now I am rethinking it. I decided to research on the web and people are saying it is just about impossible to get it right and ripe. Plus if you do, then you have to eat it right now! I really don't want to fuss over a lost cause, not worth it.

I have SARAH'S CHOICE and ATHENA in my cart also and just might stick with those instead. Still thinking as there is no hurry.

Rick, ewww on the slugs.

Your sowing peas now in zone 5? Last year when I tried sowing peas around this time of year it turned out to be too late. The vines grew but never did set pods.
