>> Your sowing peas now in zone 5?

Well, Sunset Zone 5. USDA Hardiness Zone 8.

My average first frost date is Oct 26 for 32F, or Nov 22 for 28 F. So, probably 7-8 weeks and maybe 10-12 weeks. I see estimates like "60 DTM" and "65 DTM". So, 8-9 weeks gives me a fair shot at getting pods from my second planting.

Won't they take a little frost, at least the snow peas? I see conflicting info about Carouby de Maussane gardiness:
"half-hardy" and
"Once they get going a light frost won't hurt."

I saw a comment by Farmerdill somewhere that frost could harm pea BLOOMS, but not vines.

This is my first year trying for fall snow/snap peas.

Ok, here is what I have decided to grow instead of the Savor melon.

Magnifienza at High Mowing Seeds. Already have the seeds, which I had forgotten about until now.

http://www.highmowingseeds.com...

And here is another that really interests me.

Caribbean Gold

Here is the information for Avara which I have been trying to grow for two years.

http://www.highmowingseeds.com...

And this I found which definatly might be better than Savor-

Sivan CHARENTAIS with reliable fruit set (so they say).

I still have to plant fall peas. I have never done fall ones before either. The first ones got cut down by cut worms! Thumbs down

GROSS! I HATE slugs and I'm not really squeamish, but I HATE slugs! And you're right FINDING it is better than NOT FINDING it! Rolling on the floor laughing

Rita: let me check but I may have some seeds still of the melon I could send you a couple to try then you wouldn't feel like you wasted your money. Your Sugar Cube is probably just as good though!

Rick: I never heard of sunset zone. So hardiness zone you are the same as I am! I have no idea what sunset zone I am in. Guess I could look it up. Whistling

Arlen, we cross posted. See my updated melon post. I have moved on from thinking about those melons and planning on something else. Thank you for thinking of me and your kind offer.

I had good luck with Maverick. Even with all the rain I had a couple of good ones.

I think they started there, but I'm not sure.

http://www.sunset.com/garden/c...

Southeast:
http://www.sunset.com/garden/c...

Grantville, GA (SW of Atlanta?) looks like the borderline between 31 and 32:

31 - Interior Plains of Gulf Coast and Coastal Southeast - - hot and sticky summers, chilly winters

32 - Interior Plains of Mid-Atlantic States; Chesapeake Bay, Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey - - less humidity than Zone 31.

I don't think I should quote extensively from them, but it's worth looking at.

Once you know your "Sunset Zone" (or ZIP code) , you can use their plant finder and apply many other selection filters.
http://plantfinder.sunset.com/...

I always keep a hot link to "Sunset" in my signature block. Often people will ask questions without saying what kind of climate they live in, but Google maps plus Sunset usually give me an idea.

Technology - I love it.

I am setting a square raised bed for melons next year and then I will also have two trellis setups in the backyard. So I will be hoping for a record breaking great year for melons.

Cindy, that's odd. I don't see how they can get yellow and seedy before getting full grown. Are you sure you don't have some tiny pickling type that you are thinking should grow into slicer size? Weird!

Well, not unless I got other batch of plants that are mislabeled. I have had several from the nursery this year that were not what they were labeled as, including those wierd colored bell peppers that look purple. That could be the reason though Rita because I planted burpless seeds and I bought burpless, and the bought ones do not look like the ones planted from seed.

I am thinking you have mislabeled cukes. I think best bet might be to buy seeds overwinter for next spring so that you get exactly the types of cucumbers that you want to grow.
