I just saw them both there. Thumbs up

I have melons on the brain since yesterday. Hilarious!

And look at this one they also have. French Orange.
http://www.harrisseeds.com/sto...

I have seeds of this one already as I bought it from Park Seeds. But it is a Charentais cross which is what I feel that I would rather grow than the Charentais Savor I was looking at yesterday at Johhnys and then decided against because of all the negative reviews on growing them.

I do have melon seeds here (not too many) but now am looking at it all very critically to decide on what I will really grow instead of just wishes for everything. I have put check marks on my melon seed packages that I will be growing for sure and the French Orange is one of them.

I am getting frustrated with all the summer squash. As if that ratty powdery mildew was not bad enough they just aren't producing squash. Covered and covered in male blossoms so that it is a very big deal when a female blossom appears. All these plants are all different ages in that I have started seed and new plants at various times during the summer. Just want them to put out the female blossoms already again.

No worries, I just looked up myself.

Hope your squash has enough heat to produce for you!

I figgure the squash can't keep up the male blossoms only forever. So some females had better show up. But then I don't really know. I mean maybe they pump out male blossoms in cooler weather. Confused

Arlene, what did you think about those melons? Especially the two charentais crosses? They sure did sound good to me and I have decided I do want to try them next year.

Picked small tomatoes again, you know the Juliet Grape tomatoes and the Sweet Million Cherry tomatoes. Also had a nice batch of various eggplants. And the usual glut of cucumbers. Nothing wasted though. I was able to give away the excess cucumbers and eggplants.

I did see two female blossoms on my squashes today. Along with the usual tons of male blossoms.

How do you tell if a turnip is ready for pulling? I have two big ones already but not sure if I am supposed to wait till they get even bigger. Going by grocery store size is no help either as I have bought turnips in various sizes.

Was looking at my late planted or second season cucumbers and they are just loaded with smaller cucumbers. Of course getting bigger ever day. Most of these are not trellis, which is unusual for me. well, about 40% trellised the rest left to sprawl on the ground.

Rita, you can pull the turnips at any size that you like. I prefer them about the size of -- I have no idea what to compare to -- a large beet? Definitely a bit larger than a golf ball, although I have pulled them at that size also.

I am SHOCKED! You have some cucumbers NOT trellised? Until you mentioned that I completely forgot I even planted a late crop. Guess I'd better check on them soon. We actually have gone all week with no rain so they may even need watering!

I guess these are beet size. Maybe not as large. Will look more carefully tomorrow.

Yep. thought of putting up the trellis for those cukes but just left them instead. They seem to like it. Setting baby cukes like mad.

My dad never trellised his cukes. When I first heard about it in Square Foot Gardening I thought it was a terrific idea and have done it ever since! But they let their tomatoes sprawl too. Cages were a novelty to me! Imagine that!

My mom grew cukes in her veggie garden when I was a child and she just left hers on the ground to sprawl. But I have always grown them up a trellis of some sort. Mostly I do it to save space but I like to keep things off ground. These sprawled cukes are in a raised bed that is only about two feet deep but very raised so I don't need to worry about bending down far to see if there are cukes to pick.

The raised bed helps. My son thought I was crazy when I trellised melons and used old pantyhose for slings! Rolling on the floor laughing

Yes, the disadvantage of growing big melons on a trellis. I have not had to do anything about the Sugar Cube Melons. No supports needed and they do fine. But the melons are not overly large.
