If you don't get started on it you don't miss it. And when I moved here I was much too busy so now I don't miss it at all.

I haven't cancelled cable YET, but I get whiplash from shaking my head in bafflement:
100 channels, and there is still NOTHING on?!!?

But I love The Daily Show, Fashion Police with Joan Rivers big mouth, and usually NCIS.
And once each year, The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

August has been much cooler than normal for us as the weather has been consistently cooler. This morning very cool. I even had to shut windows last night. I don't want it to cool down too much too quickly as I still have lots growing in my veggie gardens.

The two melons pictured are the last from the vines in the pot. Those vines were just about dead, I was waiting on the melons to slip. So today they did and I pulled out all the potted melon vines.

The ones in ground are still growing well. I have some melons coming on them.

The melons were so successful this year that I am planning on growing lots more next year. Have already picked out a spot.

I have flowers and baby cukes on my second planted of the season cucumber vines. First year I have tried a second (and late) planting of cucumbers but it looks like these will do well.

Haying season is about over, at least up here in the dry hills. Down in the valleys where they have a longer irrigation season, they will get at least one more cutting. Our neighbor has sold most of his lambs. He sells most of his beef and some of the lambs to individual customers for their own use. It's certified organic and grass fed. More and more people are wanting their meat without chemicals. We have one of the lambs in our freezer.

Our corn is getting pretty close to being ready to eat. We wait and wait for corn! Deer are picking and ruining tomatoes, biting the tops out of cabbages, and doing other damage.

I've raised a few pigs and agree that they are dumb! I would take a bucket of leftover milk to them and often they would root up under it and spill the whole thing before I could get it poured into their trough. Now that's STUPID!
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

That sounds good, buying grass fed lamb and beef too if you need it from your neighbor. That way you know exactly were it came from.

Do you buy it butchered? Or is that something you need to take care of yourself?

No fields of hay around here. Fields of hay must look pretty before cutting.

Rita, the neighbor has the mobile slaughter guy come to do the kill, then the carcass is taken away in a refrigerated truck, transferred to a chill room for a few days, and then cut and wrapped to our specifications, and finally frozen. We can get a whole beef or a half.

Now that works! And buying half a beef cow seems more a reasonable amount. Oh the joys of being rural. Nothing like that around here. But I love lamb and would for sure be buying the lamb.

He ships meat packed in dry ice. Got room in your freezer? A whole lamb, cut and wrapped, takes up about 1 1/2 cu ft of space.

Fond memories of my two sons sitting on a hay bale watching the butcher dress out cows. Our guy would put all the organs into a 5 gallon bucket and let the boys poke and prod them. I always thought I should try the organs, but when it came time to say yay or nay, I'd take one look in the bucket and tell the butcher to do whatever he wanted with them.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.
