We have had a lot of rain and the temp's have been cooler than they have ever been for a Ga. summer. My upright sedum must think it's fall,they all have buds.They haven't even grow to their full height but are getting ready to bloom.If the weather warms up or gets hot,will they still bloom??

Yes they will still bloom. Mine are starting bloom now too. That is usual for my area they bloom from late August-Sept. According to the weather (the degree of sun and warmth/cool) will affect how long they hold their color will be your only difference.

If it stays warm they will retain the color, if it gets too cool the color fades and you get the brown winter heads.

This is my first year growing upright sedum and I'm hoping to get an ID on some of mine from their bloom color.I had no idea what triggered them to bloom.Last year when i put them in the bed it was about mid sept & they were in full bloom.Others were given to me or are cuttings and i have no idea what color they will be.

You are welcome. My sister lives in Ga and I think you are on time for bloom time. Sometime they rush them to bloom for sales. But as a rule they usually start to bloom at the end of Aug so you have blooms in Sept for the fall.

It seems like mine have been forming buds for a long time.Will the weather cause their growth to slow and speed up.Some are also not as tall as they should be.

There are many reasons one is shorter than another.

Some are taller than others.
Some may be shorter because they get more sun. They can be in the same area and another sedum in front of it can cause it to get a little less sun. If it get less sun they tend to be taller because they stretch for the sun.

I have some in my shade garden because I like the fall color. Those are as tall as a bush in shade.

Yes they do start getting their bloom heads early especially if it is very warm. So it make it seem like the blooming heads are there a long time.

And some of them will get taller next year when the plant is more mature.

I hope they will get bigger next year. I bought some of the tallest ones last year to put in the back and they aren't half as tall as when i bought them.I thought maybe they needed to be fed.We have had so much rain that any liquid fertilizer was out of the question.I'm not sure what they should be fed with 20-20-20 or 15-30-15?? I have put out some osmocote but prefer liquid.

Jelinda, step away from the fertilizer. That will not give you the results you desire. It is sun, heat, water and TIME that will give you the results you desire. As with most plant except weeds. First and second year plants establish the 3rd year they leap and continue to increase.

You are not going to be able to rush the plants by adding fertilizer. We have had way too much rain and not enough sun this year. It was good weather to take cuttings and sticking them in the ground to root though.

I call them my children. It takes time for the children to become adults.

Thanks Cinta,i do agree about the rain,i haven't had to water much at all this summer,so i none of my plants have had more than the time release osmocote i put out everywhere in the spring.I guess i expected the upright sedums i bought last fall to get as tall & their blooms to be as big as they where when i bought them.I know that they come so big & pretty from green houses though.I hope to find a better selection of upright sedum to to fill in that section of my garden this fall.


My bed borders a place we haven't gotten cleared out completely yet,weplan on clear undergrowth & leaving tree's.I', wanting to put the tallest sedum along the wood line & right now the semp's are out numbering the sedum.
Here's a picture i took more recently than the first one.

They are so thick what you could do is break a couple of limbs off next Spring and complete your circle across the back. They root good from a stem as you already know. If you see Matrona pick it up it is the tallest in my garden. The leaves have some maroon in them.

Now that I mentioned Matrona I have to goo see if I still have that one I do not remember seeing it this year. Wait I will be back. I am going to go take some pics.

I did not find Matrona either it did not get enough sun and is green or it is covered up with bushes I have planted. I planted to many things in one place and I have had so much rain I need to spread somethings out.

This is a yellow and green varigated leaf. It keeps trying to revert so if you look at the pic in the back I have a stem of it rooting.



Frosty Morn ....Need to move it or the bush. Things really grew crazy this year with all this rain.

I planted an upright spectabile 'neon' in the back it's height is suppose to be 24" and in front of that i planted what is suppose to only get half that tall, 'pink bomb' all the rest i have no idea what they are.I had a friend pass away last year and her husband tried to keep her plants going but when they started dying he gave them to me. Some where just broken limbs i rooted,others were small.I received so many different plants from him last year i half gotten an ID on a lot but not all.

I have been working on my rock garden for over a year & it's coming along slowly but surely.Being partially handicapped makes things go very slowly at times but without the help from people like you & everyone else on ATP and of course the hubby for muscle i would never have gotten this far.I've been growing plants for only a little more than 3yrs. when i had to stop training horses because of my diagnosis.I'm very thankful for people like you who go that little extra bit to help.Thank you for the pictures and advice
