My middle daughter lives clear down in Colorado Springs, and they lost power for a short while. She described a few of the streets there as "level 3 whitewater". My husband is in Colorado Springs also, and he sent me a photo taken with his phone that showed birds hiding under a bush, with flood water rushing by them. I sent it to Weather Channel and they posted it online.
I've heard from family in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Tucumcari, and all three of those places had flooding from this same storm!
We were supposed to get rain here, but it has stalled over Colorado.
Toni, hope you are ok! The news showed whole towns that are cut off and without power or water. That is terrifying.

I'm OK everyone.. just been really busy busy busy. Since I've been "working" from home this week, I haven't been sitting in front of a computer & haven't done much that way. Here's some pics & videos of less than a mile from my house. I have water & electricity. I live in the SE part of the metro (Parker, CO) and we always get WAAAAAAAAAAY less rain than further up north. We get the snow more than up north, but not the rain. That being said, I've gotten over 18 inches of rain in the past WEEK. Today, we got over 6" of rain. Now, mind everyone that we usually get less than 30inches of rain for the YEAR. So we're getting almost 100% of all our rain in the past week... and it's raining again. I have an iPhone 4s, which is connected to the National Weather Service, and it's CONSTANTLY going off with flash flood warnings, get to higher ground, yada yada yada.

Here's what I posted as a sample of some pics on Cubits.

http://cubits.org/bluegardens/...

I took over 200 pictures.. posted the "good ones" on IMGUR soon in an album.

My friend who lives in Loveland has been posting pictures of her area on FB. She is on high ground but is locked in, can't go anywhere as all the roads around her are flooded. Her nephew and his wife live just 4 miles away and they were evacuated, their home flooded. This was an awesome video she posted from Youtube taken just a few miles from her, of Thompson Canyon, keep watching as the power of the rushing water get even more amazing https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

I kept expecting that house to go under, wonder if it ever did, seems hard to imagine it being able to last that much long with the strong pounding it was taking, just seeing how fast the road was being eroded!

Sue - reason for that is because most of Colorado is either granite (mountains) or sand (plains). We have very little "dirt" here. Our growing soil isn't very good as this area is too windy for loam or black dirt. And what isn't sand is hard clay. That's why the roads are being washed away as fast as they are .. Nothing underneath them to really hold everything down. In my own yard, I have "soil" (clay) for exactly 12", then it's almost 100% pure sand underneath.

Toni...

I've seen similar problems up here after a serious wildfire. Fortunately, we are not as densely populated. Watershed improvements and maintenance are big issues up here.

I am glad you are safe.

Smiles,

At least one place up north, the Wildlife Refuge, wasn't in too much danger. Here's an awesome video of the place with the aftermath. Wait til about 0:55 seconds! Very short video.

I am putting crocus into the south side rose garden today. Last year I bought 500 mixed large flowered crocus from Scheepers and planted them ALL in that rose garden. I was really looking forward to a mass display of crocus this spring. Never happened! Grumbling Squirrels came and dug up every one of those bulbs last fall!!! I had three blooms! Grumbling Sad

So this year I planted slightly deeper and will be covering and mulching the entire area after I am done planting today with some straw I have set aside especially for this. That way the squirrels don't see the disturbed soil, don't dig to see what might be there and don't eat my bulbs!

I thought I had a lot last year with 500 but am putting in 600 this year. Have to crawl around on my hands and knees to get them planted. Hilarious!

Rita, you might try putting some blood meal on the ground. it keeps the rabbits off my plants, not sure on the squirrels.
My roses have a nice little flush going on. i took inventory this morning. Looks like I have 48 different Austin roses, plus 3 that have lost their tags. Summer Song didn't make it, and nobody is carrying it that I can find. Maybe it was a weak rose? My Summer Sun, from Kordes, is full and gorgeous. I planted both at the same time. I think both came from Palatine. Sue, did you buy both also? Are they both healthy?

The five new ones Austin has for 2014 are distinct from his earlier intros. They are beauties! Most likely, I'll order all five. My wish list from earlier years includes 'England's Rose', 'Skylark', 'Princess Anne', 'Tam O'Shanter', climbing 'Wedgewood Rose', 'St. Alban', 'Pilgrim' and 'Sister Elizabeth'. Hopefully, I'll add at least three from that group. The 'Fighting Temeraire' that I bought this year is still in bloom. I don't usually order singles, but this one has an interesting color blend. It has just a tad of blackspot, but it is planted in a crowded area without much air circulation. It also doesn't get enough sun. Once I remove a few overgrown shrubs, it will be happier. So many of the Austins look alike. I am particularly searching for new ones that still have the sturdy growth habits, the disease resistance, the scent, but aren't a look-alike to ones I have.
None of the new rose catalogs have arrived here yet, so I'm searching online. Are any other companies offering Austins?

Rita - Squirrels dug up your bulbs? What if you have a bird feeder w/cracked corn in it? That way, instead of hunting for food, they'll leave your bulbs alone? I didn't know that squirrels ate bulbs... squirrels here leave my muscari bulbs alone, and they're extremely surface! Nor were my hyacinths touched.

They have never bothered my bulbs. Never. And I planted crocus all over the garden but they only dig up the ones in the southside rose garden. This year I am mulching directly as I finish planting and they will not be able to tell anything was planted.

Squirrels here like to dig up the iris right after I plant them. We think they are just curious about what has disturbed the soil, and want to see if another squirrel has maybe buried a nut. they don't eat them, but sometimes, I find a pecan tree growing by an iris label. Maybe they are using my work to dig, kind of like a cowbird relies on some other bird to build a nest and take care of babies for them.
Sneaky squirrels. But i do appreciate how much entertainment and exercise they give my two labradors!
Hurray! Lovey dubby

Cindi, I only have Summer Song, two of them in fact, doing quite well.
I even named my new Etsy shop after it, Summer Song Cottage, sounded cute I thought. Sticking tongue out
