I agree

Killer is a changing phenomenon; even in one pot you may have offsets in different colours;

I like to go through the rows of plants and see one in awesome colours or appearence and have to look who it is; and often I have to say - never seen before on this one Big Grin

Peter,

Interesting that 'Killer' is behaving the same in Germany. The 'Killer' X self seedlings show these striking changes but interestingly the 'Jungle Shadows' X 'Killer' seedlings seem to be year round very intense, almost as though it captured one one of the phases of 'Killer', but these seedlings don't change much. In some of the other crosses with 'Killer' the changeable colors show in some of the seedlings but others also capture one of the phases of 'Killer' but in a more permanent state.

When 'Jungle Shadows' first appeared as a seedling I was amazed at how well the color held up. In those days it was one of the few that did have color all year. Most turned green. I remember my call from Helen Payne after she received that plant "We can sell LOTS of that one Kevin". Amazingly, 45 years later they still are selling it! In the seedlings from self pollinating 'Jungle Shadows' there have been a majority of seedlings that keep color year round.

Kevin,

but what is better;

strong colours held up around the year or strong colours with changes....I like them both Smiling

only small colours and turning just green isn't very attractive for me;

a powerfull green around the year is also nice;

Peter,

and yes we almost have too many reds and purples now. I grew up when the "green with purple tips" types were about 75% of what we had. I want something different. I want year round color. It is interesting to me that it appears that the semps seem to follow two paths for year round color: ones that keep the same colors and others that change, often radically.

As I was looking at the seedlings today I'm very excited about some cobwebbed seedlings from 'Jungle Shadows', 'Harlequin Rogue', and 'Watermelon Rind' that I hope will be BIG and with unusual colors. Too many cobwebs look alike. I had self pollinated 'Kramer's Spinrad', which is one of the bigger cobweb types for me, and several of the seedlings are much bigger, already 4" in diameter from seed planted this spring. However, the biggest seedling has the least impressive cobweb at this point. It may be difficult to produce hairs of sufficient length to produce a cobweb on these bigger rosettes. The dream of a 9" purple cobweb might be a difficult one to obtain!

Kevin that is a very good point, it would be hard to produce and maintain webbing of that size! I love the idea of more colorful webby semps!! nodding

Well I'm sure the 9" purple cobweb is in that next batch of seedlings........ Maybe if I live to 85 I'll be able to get it. Actually I've been surprised what i have been able to accomplish in these first few seedling crops here in Oregon. Of course finding 'Killer' such an interesting parent has definitely helped in that cause. All but one of my new introductions utilize it or 'Jungle Shadows' or both.

Of course what we see in irises, daylilies, and daffodil flowers were things that we never DREAMED would occur. I think we have the same potential for new incredible plants. Compared to the hundreds of breeders in other genera we're dealing with a handful.
