Ooooh Robin. Glad you posted Moonlight Orchid. I just acquired that one last spring. I sure hope it blooms that nice for me this summer.

The first year it bloomed for me it was less lavender (soil?) but the second year it was much more blue! So be forewarned that it sometimes takes a few years for a flower to mature in color. I'm so glad I didn't toss any of my daylilies that took a while to reach their true form and color (mostly because I didn't have the time to chuck them). I have learned a lot over the years and I adore these dls now.

Oh how i do know that Kathy. I had purchased Banned in Boston and the first year it bloomed I was very disappointed in it. The second year it was spectacular. I totally understand.

HELAMAN is another favorite.
I about lost this one to our extra harsh winter this year. There were 7 fans last fall. All but one fan had rotted. I soaked that one fan in a mild bleach and water solution and potted it up in clean soil. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this fan will make it. If I loose it I will buy another. Gotta have this one in my garden. Smiling

Joy those are beautiful I especially like Helaman... I lost a Frances Joiner last summer it did grow and bloom but at the end of summer looked like part of it just rotted off. I was hoping for a tiny shoot to survive but so far haven't seen any green.
I'm still waiting. I have always said you can't kill 'em but I have lost one or two in recent years.

Thank you Kathy and Veronica.

I lost 88 plants this year. I'd never lost even one to winter before. There are a few with a struggling bit of green yet. So I'm separating those from the fans that died to try to save them. We had the coldest spell in Dec. that I can ever recall. I lost many new plants but there were some I had grown forever too. They were all Ev and Sev. There were many Ev and Sev that made it through the cold just fine though. I have a lot of plants, so I'm not without.

My FAVORITES , top 2 are LAVENDER HEART THROB and Magic Carpet Ride.

Sorry to here you lost so many Joy, I lost a few too mostly expensive ones. I will never plant in the fall again. All were southern daylilies.

I totally agree with you Frillylily. I may not have all newly planted spring arrivals bloom but I probably will not lose a single one over the winter either. Fall planting is not a good idea , I refuse to do it for irises and am so disgusted that I went and bought daylilies and planted in the fall.

We just had some freak weather for our area this past winter. It was some of my fall planted daylilies that I discovered were lost at first. But when I took an inventory, I discovered I had lost some I planted in the spring and there were some I had grown for years too. I had always been able to plant in both spring and fall here. But with the weather being so unpredictable these days, I'm not going to chance it in the fall anymore. From now on any fall purchases will be potted up and wintered over like I do with my tropicals. It's just too heart breaking to lose so many at once, so I don't want to have to go through it again. On the plus side, most were cheaper daylilies. However, I did lose a few the were $25 -$30. And for me, those were expensive!

I lost alot of my Liliums as well. Most I'd grown for years.
Before this I had never lost a daylily or lily to winter ever.

Joy
