Was it that the weather was just too wet? Or wet and cold?

I don't think it was any wetter than normal, but we had 10 days in Dec that got down in the single digits (normal would be low 20's, upper teens for our coldest). Then it was real mild with only a few light frosts the rest of the winter. I think it just got too cold and stayed there too long and these plants weren't used to it. I don't winter mulch here, never had to before. I may rethink that practice too. The weather is just too unpredictable anymore. I may have to learn how to garden for a colder zone just to be on the safe side.

Beardeds are best moved and planted a month or so after bloom (July here).

I just will not buy in the fall anymore. I divide mine right after bloom, and have found a few places that will sell them after they have finished blooming in June. Locally I can buy earlys in May and late iris in June. There is a lady I ordered from this year who will ship in June if you request it, she prefers June over fall. If you want I can dig up her website addy and cmail it to you.
