When I compare the price of commercial fertilizer to how much I get in a bag of alfalfa pellets .... it's a bargain for me. And I paid over $20 at Tractor Supply here in FL. My one bag will probably last me 2 years vs. less than a year for the other fertilizer. And the alfalfa has not burned any of my plants during the hot summer months. I have been using the alfalfa tea on ALL my plants, too! I love using alfalfa. I wished I had known about it when I started gardening 10 years ago. I do believe it also helps make the soil more fertile, which is a real challenge here in sandy Florida. Hurray!

That's a good way to look at it Paul. I spent $75 for three pots of muhley grass, just because I love the stuff.

Already I can see how greener my daylilies are after the lucerne pellets. Lots of signs that spring is near too. Whooooopieeee.

I was looking at my bag of alfalfa pellets today, and I noticed that it was only 17 percent alfalfa. Is that what the rest of you have?? I was a little dismayed at that number but maybe that's all it should be. I also noticed that some of what I put down last week is getting moldy on the top. Is that ok and should I be mixing it into the ground more??

If you buy the right kind I think it should be 100% Alfalfa. All it should be is Alfalfa ground up and made into pellets. We are talking about alfalfa grown in the field, harvested, dried and ground then made into pellets for feed. If only 17 per cent is alfalfa what is the rest?

Karen, are you sure that's not referring to 17% protein content?

Seed. We very much not had a cold winter again. It has been up and down the temperatures. Some day lilies have died right back that I find mystifying. I am scared of fungus there. But as we approach spring only three cultivars have me worried. A semi-evergreen Lake Norman Sunset is the worse - 3 clumps. The leaves are so small I cannot tell if they are responding to the alfalfa.

I was going to ask the same thing that Sue did.... Are you sure that the 17% is not referring to the protein. I have never bought a bag of alfalfa pellets that said 100% alfalfa but it does give the percent of protein in it which is usually 16 or 17%

Oh I forgot to add that it can get moldy depending on the temps, humidity, moisture, etc. You can mix it into the ground if you want, sometimes I do and sometimes I just leave it. It has never seemed to hurt anything here

Thanks Tink. Some of mine is mouldy already. Good to know to use anyway.

It is funny buying alfalfa pellets and no horse in sight lol. I have them on my carport and I bet others are wondering because my bag has a huge horse picture on front. I have had horses in the past but none around today.

Teresa, I thought the same thing as we came home with our bag of horse food. We have a neighbor that always drives by as we are unpacking the car from a shopping trip!
