In the beginning while we were still learning, there was a smell of rabbit urine. After we directed the urine to flow into the container where it was absorbed by the manure and old bedding material there was no more bad smell.

To me the smell of decaying grass is the worst. Often we have a supply and either the weather or exhaustion keeps it on a tarp just waiting to get more compost made. The stench is horrid. I'll take some rabbit poop anytime!

Compared to chicken or swine, bunny poo is odorless.

Bonehead said:@Dave and @Trish, if you are considering raising rabbits for food, I'd do it now while your kids are young. The fun part is you always have baby bunnies to play with (the turn around time is pretty short as I recall). You will also enjoy a lot of beautiful rabbit pelts to mess with. I used to make little hand muffs out of them.

Dave said they were wanting to get bunny rabbits for manure, not for food.

(We have two pet bunny rabbits that we keep in the house, but with no compost pile, we don't save the 'bunny stuff'). Lovey dubby

@Marilyn, you won't need a compost pile. Just a shovel, a hand trowel or a post hole digger - make a hole, drop in the rabbit manure and cover it up. You can add this anytime direct from the source.

It's time for me to make one of my dyslexia reports:
When I read what I thought were your words:"You will also enjoy a lot of beautiful rabbit pellets to mess with. I used to make little hand muffs out of them."

See, I thought you were making the hand muffs of the little bunny droppings - 'pellets' not pelts - nice, warm hand muffs, but messy.

This is terrible but I thought she was making hand muffs out of the rabbits!!! They cannot poop if they are dead!! Whoa!! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Okay, let's be as accurate as possible here: if you have a small amount of poop -use a hand trowel to dig a 4-6 inch deep hole, a large amount - use a shovel to dig an 8-12 inch deep hole, a dead rabbit - use the post hole digger and dig down about 2-3 feet. And I often wonder about the person who bought my old house and if they have ever dug down about 2-3 feet for any reason. Oh, what they would find.

@Virginiarose - thanks for that; I needed a lift. (and I must be getting tired because I read this over about 8 times and still found Dyslexic typos.)

Ive had rabbits for many years--first New Zealands and then Flemish Giants. http://countylinerabbitry.webs...

The thing about rabbit poop is that it doesn't need to be composted, it can go directly into the garden--its not 'hot' like chicken, horse, or cow manure. Also since rabbits use a lot of hay, the poop is already mixed with hay. You will rapidly accumulate plenty of organic material--that is ready to go, no composting required.

Although i am very new to this forum all of the above is wrong on so many counts. Your soil and microbes will better thank you if you just spread your bunny berries on the ground and let them do the work for you 1 to 2 inches thick. 2 foot down will do nothing for your garden except give you a back ache

When we raised rabbits, we moved their cage from spot to spot in the veggie garden, just letting all the droppings fall direct to the ground. The only 'labor' involved was moving the cage, which was about 2' x 6', raised wire with a shed roof, two compartments (one for the does, the other for the buck) with a shared hay manger separating them. It was a nice setup.

I actually picked up a couple of trash bags of rabbit poo & shavings from a rabbit breeder off of Craigslist. Spread it out over my roses. There was a urine smell for a day or two, until it rained, -- it went away after the rain, and my roses are doing great.
