Thanks for the link, Linda. The most fun part starts at 5:00. Shake, rattle and sow.

Gorgeous! That will hold them for a while. ? 2-4 weeks ?

I like the way you wrapped-and-taped the end caps.

And it looks like you DID line the guttering with newspaper.

Yes. I finally got a new rotation plan for the garden done so hopefully this week we can mow the rye then rototill and rake the rows. I did remember to line it with newspaper so I'll let you know if that helps them to slide out.

Thanks!

The video with the two nice (English?) ladies confirmed that it can be tricky if they get big and the roots grab the sides.

I was thinking that the sidewalls could be pulled a little apart if the plastic or aluminum flexes a little. Then maybe the root ball could be shaken a little from side to side or up and down to break it free.

And two people looked like they would find it easier than one person.

I won't let mine grow very long in the guttering so maybe that will help. I got almost all the Oregon's to germinate but I noticed they were slower than the Sugar Snap. The Sugar Snaps had some serious roots on them. That's what's in the close up photo because the Oregon's were just starting to sprout leaves.

Very nice guttering you've got going on there!

I may just have to start my Kentucky Wonder pole beans the same way. Do ya'll think guttering would work with those? Shrug!

Worth a try. I may try it too so I can get an early start on beans.

Arlene,
Help me grow beans, please!!! Hurray!

I love beans, but have never grown them before. This'll be my first season. I have seeds for Zippers, Rattlesnakes, Lady Cream Peas, Crowders, Mississippi something-or-other, and some others. Once the cauliflowers, broccs, turnips and beets are done in RB #1, I'd like to grow the beans in that 4x8' raised bed.

Any tips would be much appreciated. I tip my hat to you.

I am not familiar with growing those varieties, sorry. I do have Rattlesnake this year but all I know is most beans DO NOT like cold soil. They will rot. Not sure about the ones you mentioned. Usually, the lighter the bean seed color, the less they will tolerate cold soil for germination. I would think if you plant after broccoli is finished it should be warm enough. I an from the north and mostly have grown bush beans like green and wax.

The Rattlesnakes are pole beans (P. vulgaris) Zipper, Lady, all crowders and Missisippi Silver are southern peas (Vigna unguiculata). The Vigna do not require suuport, but the vines are large so give them plenty of room. They will grow in the hot summer and do not require a lot other than loose soil. They yeild best in relatively poor soil. Rich soil or fertilizer may give you more vines than peas .
