This is kind of fun. We actually might get to see who's right about the name, too. That Catt is already climbing halfway out of the nice big pot it's in. If it puts on as much growth this year as it did last, I'll have to re-pot it next fall.

I'm betting the tag could be down in the pot somewhere! When I bought that plant, it was scrunched into a cracked plastic pot, and I was just a rank beginner at the orchid game, so I gave it a much too big pot. Probably was not all that worried about the tag either. Now it has devoured that big pot . . . who knows?? This is the first picture I took of it after I bought it. It sure has more orange on it than it does now, but that may be the hot weather, too. This was August of 2010.

What a difference! Now a google search with this image didn't turn up anything "most likely", but it is still fun.

Yes, went looking and found this one from last fall, mid-September. Same thing, more orange and much less red.

It had yet another flower in October, this one has a little more red as the nights were getting cooler.

Neat!
A few of my Vandas grew keikies when the top growth quit for some reason.

Around here my Laelia anceps starts opening a bunch of spikes. It takes lots of watering the sticky buds to get them to open properly.

Cold and wet pretty well sums up the day and perhaps the month. It is currently 51 degrees and overcast with light rain. My orchids are not doing well. I have lost several and even the ones in spike have slowed to a crawl. I'm discouraged to say the least. I went to my orchid club meeting yesterday with only three plants in bloom to show and the rest of the folks were in the same boat. I'm thinking about tossing all of the under achievers, cleaning the OC from top to bottom and starting over. I need a trip to Apopka.

Good morning Jim, I believe I'm needing that trip to 'Apopka' too! This winter has certainly taken its toll. Here's all I have blooming. BTW what is 'Apopka'?

Same here, Jim, although we don't have any rain yet. Weather's supposed to warm up and go back to normal Florida sun next week.

Would it cheer you up to make a trip down to Venice this weekend? The big show is on. I am going with a friend on Sunday.

I have DH returning from a trip some time in the next week. He was on a ship between Morocco and the Canaries until yesterday, and they had weather problems, too. He may fly to England if his clients can meet with him, but until I know his ETA I can't commit to an Apopka run. But Tuesday or Wednesday next week are open for me. Anybody else interested?

My Phaius are barely showing the start of spikes. Remember those wonderful Phaius we got last year in bloom for $8 apiece? I want more of those!! (hm, we went in April last year, didn't we . .. ) I've also lost my 'Little Stars' I think. Darned black spots keep popping up. (this pic from last April)

Bert, our posts crossed. Apopka is a small town north of Orlando where there are many wholesale orchid growers. Some of them will sell direct to the public so we make a trip occasionally and get wonderful deals on some really great orchids.

I found out about the orchid deals in Apopka through my Master Gardener contacts several years ago. Since then I have led several on the pilgrimage. Big Vandas for $10 and Dendrobiums for $4, Phals for $5 and so on. It is like a fix for the orchid blues. There are several big greenhouses there that take in shipments directly from Southeast Asia and then feed big retail stores like HD and Lowe's. I think of it as moving up the food chain. nodding

Gloomy, dreary, and down right chilly here, never did get above 50º all day and have had the heat on in the greenhouse all day. Rhynchostylis gigantea is blooming but I didn't want to drag the camera out in the rain to the greenhouse, which looks like a sauna inside. It's smelling up the greenhouse big time since everything is closed up. Brassavola glauca is budding up also.

Jim sorry to hear about your Palms...

Elaine, My brugs have quit blooming for now, but they didn't freeze a least, and I have a seed pod on Equador Pink Blinking

Woo hoo, way to go! Mine don't get pollenated, so I never get any seed pods.

Can't wait to see a pic of your Rhyn. gigantea!

I think tonight will be the last of the super cold nights for the next week here, yeah!! Cold and sunny today and we took a good walk around the block with the younger grandchildren ( live in town) and played in the snow with them. Fun!

Bert, lovely Orchids. I think you labeled them reverse. Would you like to fix that or shall I do it? I love the deep fuchsia color on the Potinara! Lovey dubby

Losing Orchids? I wouldn't despair, it just happens. Those orchids perish in nature too, sometimes their time is simply up and no matter what you do, they decline. I used to hold on and try try try with some of those non-performers ( no good growth, no blooms). Nowadays I say bye bye to them and rather reserve that room for good healthy growers with reliable blooms. At least - mostly….

MJ, did you say Rhyncho gigantea? Nice!!!
