Hi all. This switch to the new forum actually got some email to me and reminded me of the DG world of old. I had signed up with cubits early on but simply forgot to log on to see what's going on and then the years slipped by.

I'm in Naples in the Golden Gate Estates area and am quickly approaching the mid 70s. I find that thought to be kind'a wierd. I've been doing orchids and general landscaping around my place since buying this property back in 2004. The last two winters sort of struck me for a loop and left me in a depressed mode for a while. I lost so much of what was tropical that I was about to give up gardening in general and just let be what may. I'm over it now and things are looking better again. If we don't get another freeze this winter, most plants will return to their former glory. My Screw Pine palm (Pandanus basedowii) still looks like hell but it is not dead and will eventually recover - if given half a chance. 60+ Christmas palms are gone but no need to go on.

Upon surveying the damage I noticed that the few bromeliads that I had showed some leaf damage but were generally OK. Being that they are close cousins of my orchids, I investigated that world some more and am now as much a bromeliad fanatic as an orchid one, probably more so as the broms can be planted into my landscape.

Otherwise I have too many other hobbies and don't have enough time to spend on them. Life has too many distractions. It is nice to see a lot of familiar faces and names on these pages but not very many when considering all the gardners in South Florida. I'm quite active in several FB groups where data comes to you via email and response activity is encouraged by threads. That is missing here.

I said there are too few members in this group for South Florida. I just realized it's for all of Florida. Geez. That's roughly 19 million people. Somebody has to get the word out.

Everybody can help by spreading the word on Facebook, Twitter, friends, garden clubs, etc.

Have any recent pictures of your pond and stream? I fell in love with it when you first put it in.

Hello everyone, I'm Jim Hawk. I'm 65, soon to be 66 but am very healthy and active. I'm a Master Gardener in Hillsborough County (Tampa) and live on an acre lot on a lake in Odessa. My gardening interests are orchids, palms and cycads, grasses (both lawns and ornamentals), roses, rare tropical fruit, and most plants that are rare and different. I retired as a Defense Department physical scientest some 13 years ago and moved to Florida to care for my elderly mother who passed last year. My job allowed me to travel and live in many parts of the world, sparking my interest in tropical fruits. I met my wife of 27 years while living in Peru. We have no children or pets. Other hobbies include exercising at a gym 5 days a week and singing bass in the church choir. Just a note: somewhere on this thread I saw we have a Boilermaker. I did my grad work at Purdue back in the 70's.

Rolling on the floor laughing Jim I am your Boilermaker Rolling on the floor laughing
However I am a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers. The kind of Boiler maker I am is the kind that builds and repairs the big boilers in our power houses and in Papermills.
My job has also has allowed me to travel up and down the East Coast and into the heartland of Ky, Ohio, Ms, and even into West Texas a few years back. I too am 65 next month.
I am so happy to be retired!

Rolling on the floor laughing Sorry about the mix up, Sidney. I just thought of Purdue when I saw boilermaker. You may be the first real one I've met. By the way, I think we may have met at DG Round Up near Tampa several years ago.
