The great eater of my cherry tomatoes. Australian Koel, a migratory cuckoo. This is the male having a rest after a hard eat.Thumb of 2014-01-31/Gleni/5144a5 Thumb of 2014-01-31/Gleni/9c0d98
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.

Gleni: Very cool looking bird; I hope you planted enough cherry tomatoes for yourself too. Smiling

It's been dreary and rainy here all day but I managed to get a photo of a resident Northern Mockingbird:

Yes, he does look like he could eat up a lot of tomatoes!

Nothing new here. The usual birds come by each day to eat the seeds. Mostly Mourning Doves, lots of Mourning doves! And White Throated sparrows, song sparrows and Juncos.

I know it's Feb. but I don't have a photo to load for a new Feb. thread at the moment.
Just posting some info.
For the past 4 hours I've heard the unmistakable calls of the Sandhill cranes in the sky overhead. They keep flying over us coming from the south in large multiple groupings. Their heading is NNW. I was just out watching one group heading NW & saw them reorganize & correct their heading to NNW.
Nature knows better than we do so I would say that's a sure sign spring is on it's way.

I sure hope spring is on its way. No signs of spring here. I really feel sorry for the poor backyard birds in all this snow. Even the trees and shrubs are full of snow so they don't have any place to hang out.

I think I might be putting too much food out for the turkeys. They are now bringing a lot of friends.

16 turkeys & 5 deer. June, I hope you can afford to keep feeding them all. Hilarious!

Ann: It must be a wonderful sight seeing flocks of the Sandhill Cranes! I had no idea they headed back north so early but I read here: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/por... that they head back north in February and March ... very cool! I've never seen Sandhills in large numbers, usually just two or three at a time!

June: Wow, love the turkey's and deer photo; what a pretty snow scene!

I heard a Hawk when I was out on my back porch today and grabbed the camera. It was a Red-shouldered Hawk that landed in a pine tree on the next street over ... not real clear pictures because of the distance. He didn't perch there for long ...

This morning the turkeys began behaving oddly. The largest bird walked a short distance away from the others and began shrieking continually and loudly. The rest of the flock then huddled together, separate from the one that was calling. The reason for this behaviour soon appeared. A large-ish hawk began swooping on the smaller birds around my bird feeders. The hawk persisted in its attempts long enough for my DH to go fetch his camera with the zoom lens and take pics. He identified the raptor as a Cooper's hawk.

Although adult turkeys were not in danger from a hawk this size, it still speaks volumes that the flock leader, on seeing a hawk, unhesitatingly put his life on the line to save the others by separating from them and calling attention to himself. That brave turkey deserves a medal!

While the hawk was swooping around, all the little juncos and finches took refuge in whatever bushes they could find. This purple finch is clinging to a forsythia bush next to my kitchen window (pic courtesy of my DH).

Not much cover for the itty birds this time of year is there? Quite interesting behavior from the lead turkey.

Cool photo of the Cooper's Hawk in the snow ... sad but yeah, they have to eat too. I walked out on my back porch about an hour ago with the dog and startled a hawk that had taken a pigeon ... must have been an immature hawk because it took off and dropped the pigeon into the water; I don't think the poor pigeon was quite dead because it was moving for a few seconds before apparently drowning. Sad The hawk flew back and swooped down but took off again and I'm sure found it's dinner somewhere else. It's 82ºF here and lots and lots of green shrubbery for the small birds to hide in. What surprises me is that a lot of the Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds perch on the power lines and don't seem intimidated by the hawks at all; possibly because they know there are hundreds of doves and smaller birds for the hawks to take.

Love that cute little purple finch!!
