I'm with you, Melanie. I've killed nearly every Den and Laelia I've had. Yet I still keep buying more, like 'there must be a secret I've missed here '. Me, I'm an orchid mass murderer.

This one I didn't buy, it came from Carol along with my Gerberara start. (Thank you again ! ! ) Den. Yellow Song 'Canary' just bursting into bloom on two spikes with several more to come.

Funny, Elaine. Sometime I wish my one-and-only dendrobium WOULD die! That NOID now has 4' tall canes, probably a 8-9 of them, and is 3' wide. It was in bloom for nearly six months last year, from March into August, and is now in bloom again. It is so heavy and takes up so much room! I will be glad when I can finally get it outside and hang it under an oak tree.

It's an expanded plastic material called EcoWeb, Bert. http://www.firstrays.com/ecowe... Made from recycled plastic.

I've been trying it for a year or so, and it seems to work for all the plants I've put in it. My issue is adequate drainage, given our wonderful generous rains in the summer, so this light, airy stuff acts a lot like tree fern but dries more quickly.

I'm thinking fungus growth if too damp area. But in bright light and good air maybe perfect for orchids. Keep us up on this medium.

I think Ursula has used it for longer than I have. She gave me the link originally.

I have quite a few things growing in Epiweb baskets, at least they don't break down and the drainage is good. I think Orchids with fat roots seem to do well in that material, the roots grow right into it. I need to get some more….

Hi all!
Ursula, I wish I could send some of our "balmy" 70's your way! Overcast and kind of dreary, and a bit muggy here today.

On a brighter note though…This is the only Orchid blooming for me right now. This NOID Phal...

But what I'm most excited about is the Cattleyas that I rescued from Lowe's! Hurray! They are finally showing new root growth! Hurray! I was holding my breath for a while there…Not really sure if they'd make it or not. The Vanda has yet to show much, but I'm still hoping. I'm not going to give up! Smiling

Does anyone grow either Oerstedella centradenia or Schomburgkia grandiflora? The Oerstedella is in bloom but the Schom. is not, so the picture is sourced from the grower.

Ursula, since I just got these two varieties in a couple of weeks ago, and the Oerstedella's are all mounted on cork (which I thought unusual), perhaps you can tell me about care for these two. I have several reed-stems that have nice, multi-rooted growths on them, probably ready to divide, and I don't know what I should put any divisions in - mounted or pots. I am equally in the dark with the Schom. care.

Beautiful old species Schomburgkia that I don't have but would like to. By the way, it is now called Mcp grandiflora.

Ken, we cross posted. Treat Schoms just like Catts but give them a little more room. Be sure to support the long spikes. Nice buy.

Most of my schoms are in baskets with little medium and watered daily if roots are exposed or watered heavily weekly and misted daily if roots are in more medium (in high light). This is how I grow all the big catts.

Thanks Jim and Kathy. My research showed the name "update", and I even contacted the grower in Maui about the name. He simply said (and all the growers pretty much say the same thing) "It takes too much time and is too expensive for us to change the labels and our website every time one of the orchid societies changes a name. You can change your own labels if it bothers you."

What do you know about the Oerstedella?

Jim, you and I might just be able to do some trading later.
